The Nissan 510 concept actually looked very attractive to me. The IDX. The one that they never did anything with. I admit, if Toyota had brought that to market as a Celica, I’d have been tempted to jump ship. I thought that Body style was really reminiscent of the ‘71-‘74 Celica coupes. I’m mentally vulnerable.

You'd think these manufacturers have enough names to use instead of poaching a sports car name for an SUV....

Toyota has a Yaris Cross and Corolla Cross, both mini SUV/crossovers without using a sportscar name for it.

Then again theres a rumor that their crown sedan is turning into an SUV which is a similar situation, not as big a facepalm though (the crown nameplate has been around forever though...i think the car is on its 16th generation now?)

Ford calling their electric crossover thing a 'Mustang' was not happenstance. It was a carefully thought out marketing strategy.

Electric crossovers are trendy. Everyone seems to be coming up with one. Ford realized they needed something to attract attention to what otherwise might have been a yawn over yet another damned electric crossover. They realized the most recognized, valuable name in their company was Mustang. The fact that Mustang represented a nostalgic, iconic1960's pony/muscle/sporty car completely unrelated to an electric crossover was irrelevant. The name had recognition. It would attract attention. It would make people look at their new creation whereas otherwise they might have ignored it. People would want to see just what this abomination called Mustang was. So, Ford did the smart business move and used the name.

The fact that they've sullied the once legendary Mustang name, and pissed off a whole generation of Mustang fans (myself among them) didn't matter to them. Hell, they discontinued their entire passenger car line in the U.S. (other than the Mustang), so blaspheming the Mustang name was nothing. They realized that the future belongs to electrics and crossovers, not gas engine V8 dinosaurs. So, they followed the money.

It was the smart business move. But still shameful.

They almost did it with the Ford Probe back in the early 90's. The Probe was supposed to be the next Mustang but being a FWD 2 door coupe didnt sit well with the purists so it got branched off into its own car and the Mustang stayed a V8 powered RWD car.

It'd make some sense if they actually plann on branching off the Mustang name into its own lineup like the RAM trucks....(i think Corvette was rumored to be doing that too?) But who knows if that is what they're doing....

Couldnt they revive an old dead nameplate for the EV crossover instead of using Mustang...like Thunderbird? or call it the E-bird lol.

Here's a thought. They could have used the Mustang Mach E name for an EV and actually made it a Pon-E car instead of another damn crossover.
