The Watch Thread

Since me and @serialk11r tend to clutter up Random Thoughts with watch talk, another member pointed out that we don't have a Watch Thread. Now we do.

In my opinion mechanical watches are the 3rd component of The Trifecta of Attainable Mechanical Awesomeness (TM). The other 2 being cars (naturally), and firearms. Since those are pretty well covered, let there now be watches! (Forgive the dramatism...)

So first, just picked up a vintage automatic Timex today. $20.

Throw up some pics, people.

Any Casio fans? G-Shock, Baby-G, Pro Trek, etc...

My first digital watch in ages may be a Pro Trek PAW1500T-7V.

But the specs make it sound HUGE, 56mmx50mm. How do these wear?

Here's my orange monster:

I've had this watch for almost 2 years now, worn almost every day. This watch is heavy, durable, and keeps excellent time for an automatic. For sub-$200, I've been very impressed.

Hmm okay the M198S I showed you in the other thread can be had for the low price of 495 + possible 10% discount...should I just pull the trigger? Slightly unnerving knowing that a significant chunk of my bank account balance is in 2 watches.

I personally wouldn't. For that range I would get a Seiko SARB either the green dialled Alpinist 17(?), or the blue/silver Cocktail Time Cool 65. It will still take a significant undercut of price for me to get a Sea-Gull. There's a vintage handwound Citizen on my Craigslist that is very similar styling for $100. More character.

But really, if you're unnerved at the cost just don't do it

My dream watch would be a Grand Seiko Spring drive chronograph (the titianium and gold one #SBGC005)....so smooth movement and beautiful design, but way too expensive for me to afford...

As for the watches I do have currently, they are two Orients:

1.) 2012 Limited Edition BRZ GT300 watch [quartz] which I'm getting customized -already bought a Panerai style leather band and quick clasp release for it and will be having the crystal switched to Sapphire, ugly-hideous bezel removed, case bead blasted, and seconds dial correctly aligned. Being a 50mm case it's just the right size for my taste.

Below is a picture of it on my wrist.

2.) Defender (22 Jewel automatic): A little smaller than I would prefer at a 42 mm case size, but I really like the face on it.

Wouldn't mind getting a strap and Panerai style clasp as well like this one:

Had some Invicta Reserves before but am not really impressed with their quality or reliability, and it is tough finding any Invicta's I like the looks of, and when I do it's often the most costly ones. Orient's provide a much better investment, better quality and I like their design philosophy.

For a beater watch I like the Casio G-Shocks, never owned one though. Recently bought one for my brother (GW6900-1 Tough Solar/Multi-band) and he's really enjoying it.

I've been looking for a SARB 031 for months. Lost the ebay auction and decided to get a Seiko 5 Pilot.

Seiko SARB 031(Still my fav and on the hunt):

Seiko 5 Pilot that I retired for the Speedie Pro:

Kudos to the Seiko fans here!
