i admit, i did laugh when for decades, the tag line of funding for trips to mars was to find water. they didn't find water, so immediately, the story changes that it's been under the surface the whole time!

Oh just you wait. And while you're at it read Wells' War of the Worlds. My be is we'll actually find some sort of life on Mars - at the microbial level. And like the Martians in Wells' book, it will kill every one who goes. There's no running from the pandemics baby.

Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, vaccinations are likely to be an ongoing part of our future.

The harsh reality is that SARS-CoV-2 is here to stay. It's endemic, and we will never be rid of it (at least not in the U.S. with our impatience, short-sightedness, selfishness, and unwillingness to do what would be needed to contain it as has been done in other countries like New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan).

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-1...er-going-away/

Both because the immune response to the current COVID vaccines fades over time, and more so, the continued rise of variants that may be increasingly resistant to vaccines, for those who want to stay safe we will need to get regular, periodic vaccinations going forward (either with booster shots to augment antibody levels, or more likely, new vaccines tailored to work against variants) similarly to how we now get the flu vaccines.

My sister is currently at about 24 hours post-Pfizer 2nd dose. She says she hasn’t felt any symptoms. Though it’s warmer today in Chicago and she decided to use the heat at her apartment. So I’m wondering if maybe she’s having chills. She denied it though.

Makes me wonder if she potentially has just had a lot of exposure to COVID. She never contracted it that we know of, and she’s higher risk due to health plus working at a cafe (plus commuting there via public bus).

...assumes that not wearing a mask impacts others. That assumption is false for those that are not infected. A simple test can tell us if we are, or are not infected...those not infected, and/or vaccinated should be free to go maskless....assuming everyone is a carrier/spreader is a false assumption.

But the point is a lot of people aren’t regularly getting tested. So if they haven’t been tested and aren’t showing symptoms, then they won’t know they’re infected and can spread it.

Especially evidenced by people in this thread saying they’d go out without a mask regardless.

The latter part doesn’t really work either, with the false assumption.

My dad taught me to drive and he said I should always imagine how other people on the road are driving. As in, don’t assume everybody is as observant / safe as I am.

Sometimes you need to do your part to be extra cautious even if you trust yourself simply because you A) can’t trust others, and B) don’t want other’s actions to affect your own actions, which could then cause accidents/injuries.

Fuck me. It's like Groundhog Day over here. I shouldn't be surprised. I realized in my twenties while serving in the Navy, that some people are just hostile towards others. No amount of respectful engagement will help because they live in a completely different world. This is where patience and longsuffering come into play.
