Man, today I went to Laguna Seca with my MR2, and I managed to have a great time...until I crashed the car It is hard to remember what exactly went wrong because it seemed like the car suddenly spun really fast and pretty soon I was facing the wall. I think I was basically at the limit of grip and my outer tires touched the edge of the track and lost traction.

Strangely, I feel like crashing was...kind of fun? And driving on the edge and losing control certainly was one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life. It would just be nice if it didn't cost so much money.

It just sucks that the car I worked on for so long lived such a short life...

Yea I think I'm okay, it really didn't hurt much. Felt like falling face first into a sort of firm cushion. No symptoms of concussion and no pain anymore, but I will go get it checked out tomorrow just in case. The airbag completely prevented any neck movement, which I found really neat. I like airbags! Yay safety.

Now I understand why people like tracks with big runoff spaces like Thunderhill. It's too bad they're kind of far away from the metropolitan area.

That's a really good attitude. Are you sure it's ready for the scrap yard, even as a dedicated track rat? Is it toast?

The front is smashed in with the strut towers deformed. MR2s are always toast when you crash them. I actually just gave it to a race shop that leases Spec Miatas at the track for 1k. I can get maybe 4k out of it if I try hard to part stuff out, but there's no place to put a wrecked car that doesn't roll, and I need a shop with a lift to remove the bigger stuff which is super inconvenient.

I figured that the many days I would spend parting it out wouldn't be worth the extra 2k that ends up in my pocket. Some guy sold his crashed car with similar upgrades that still rolled for 2.5k earlier this year.

Damn. Don't I know how that goes! Take care of yourself. Airbags are indeed neat. Seat belts still hurt like crazy. You walked away, and that's what matters. Onward!

At least you were driving your car...

Nah, after all the time I spent fixing this car and the previous MR2 Spyder, I am kind of done with these cars as all the little issues are really annoying, and the car has so many flaws it feels like it's not worth the effort. I would prefer something either really janky so I can just drive a really stripped down car (like an NA Miata), or something that is better from the factory so I don't have to touch it as much (S2000, Porsche). In a few years if the Honda baby NSX rumor materializes I would want one of those assuming it's not total crap, for now I am thinking of getting an S2000 for resale value or a really really old Miata or something to save money.

Not having a garage with lift and such means it's not worth stripping parts and rebuilding stuff. Given housing prices in major metropolitan areas, that's not something I'm going to have for a long, long time.

Here's a video from Daikoku PA in Yokohama, JP of us riding in a 2JZ=powered Rolls Royce Phantom. Yes, Japan is a fairy wonderland for JDM cars.
