You still have to pay the provincial (and maybe federal? I'd need to check) sales tax on anything you bring in, on top of the extra 5.1%.

But the markup on the tC isn't that bad when you factor in those extras (which I would option in anyway for Ottawa winters). And for anyone planning to buy new, always ask the dealer to throw in free winter tires on steel rims. It never hurts to ask.

Subaru is going to rape us like they always do... Everyone reading this read will buy an FR-S instead of the BRZ because the FR-S will cost $5000 less.

Subaru hates Canada. Tell your friends.

Yup, if both companies follow their pricing structure then it's going to be Scion US MSRP plus $1500 to $2000, vs Subaru US MSRP plus $6000 to $7000. At that point I'll probably get over the HVAC controls and interior trim differences.

OH my, this is going to be very interesting to see pricing on the same car with 2500 dollars worth of options from one company that maintains a 1% to 8% markup vs Subaru at 40%.

Another small but telling difference, I talked to both a Scion and Subaru dealer today. The Scion salesmen knew as much as we do about the 86, seemed super excited, and happily chatted with me about what he wants to do to HIS when he buys (demos, whatever lol) one. I was put on a list of names for him to contact as more pricing and ordering info becomes available, he also said they are going to have a demo car right away for test drives (smart move).

The Subaru salesmen said "what?" when I asked about the BR-Z. Then proceeded with a "OH!! yeah the little car that's coming....hmm it's going to be a while but I'll happily take a deposit if you want to be the first one on the list". Also he asked "you must have seen it's picture in the paper last week!" (holds up a picture of the STI concept).

So there ya go....I'm starting to get over the FR-S interior quicker and quicker....

Oh come on, you can't add in a cash rebate for Hyundai but nobody else... Mazda was giving around $10k in rebates on the RX-8 for the last few years...

That said, I don't think you can just say that Scion in general has a low difference between USand Canadian pricing. You also have to look at position in the market and what the competitors are selling for.

I'd bet the FR-S will come in slightly north of the Civic Si, VW GTI and Mazda Miata.

The point is that with Subaru Canada's gouging, er... 'pricing', the BRZ is going to come in way, way, way north of the Scion FR-S.

Show me a "CASH" rebate for any car I listed and I'll update. I didn't include upgrade rebates, only ones that reduce the final price of the car. I even ran Carcostcanada reports and carsaver reports for a bunch of these cars.

Actually, you can say Scion is doing an 8% markup because all 4 of their cars have less than a 10% markup vs the USA. Last year the Base Subaru Impreza Wagon was $17500 in the US and $25000 here. That's totally fucked! It's looking better for 2012 model year but still. Look at the Lexus IS250, incredible value for Canadians!

You think the FR-S is going to cost $30000? Miatas are $29k here! The Civic SI is $26000 and even that is too much. Seriously, the Genesis Coupe shits ALL over the Civic SI for less money, so does the Mustang.

I'm happy Mazda gave rebates on the RX8 in Canada, the base RX8 was $10000 more here than the USA for 2011! It's no longer in production so that's irrelevant.

My math was a little off, Subaru ONLY charges a 35% markup for the WRX... but then we pay another 13% of that 35% in additional taxes.

There are other issues when comparing prices directly like that as well, like on the IS250, in the USA powered leather seats and a sunroof are standard, in Canada the base model has manual cloth seats (it's really nice cloth, but still cloth), and no sunroof.

It's hard to compare apples to apples sometimes.

So true, and that usually comes into play more with the premium vehicles, at work I see MANY U.S. cars coming into to be certified only to have to tell the customer they do NOT have heated seats, Xenon adaptive headlights and other niceties that come in EVERY Canadian model. All of a sudden the five thousand dollars they think they saved starts to fall away little by little.

Now the Subaru and Scion are going to be a tougher to gauge. All these great reviews on both cars are just making want to get actual pricing for crying out loud!!

Thanks for that time and effort, very interesting. Had I known about the $10k off the RX-8 I might have pulled the trigger on one, glad I waited for the FR-S.

I've found my Tiburon very reliable, but the Genesis is just too big and musclecar-y for me. Even the 2nd-gen Tib drove like an Elantra compared to my 1st-gen.

Hmmm.. The performance and mission of the FR-S and Miata are pretty much the same, so I'd expect the pricing to be very similar.

I think the FR-S is going to be more desirable than the Civic and have more sports credibility, so it will be more expensive.

And IMO, the Genesis Coupe is one size class up. The new one sounds like it will be a stormer, but the original 2.0T is pretty slow for it's power.
