Two different things with the same coworker today.

1. I'm having a bunch of errors compiling some code so they ask me to push it to the online repository so they can get a closer look at the problem. So I push the code with some other irrelevant changes I'm still working on. The coworker immediately starts critiquing everything instead of focusing on the thing I'm actually having trouble with.
2. Later on once they realize they did way more than I asked for, they suggested simplifying this one thing. So I tried it but the code wouldn't work because it currently expects the non simplified version. So I messaged them saying that and should I update it to expect the simpler thing. Their response was "we just need to simplify that and don't need to do what you're saying."

I literally already did this and instead of trying to understand what I tried they literally repeat the thing I said I already tried that didn't work.

And screenshare or get in a conference room if you are colocated. We call them tabletop reviews, even if they are virtual (because conference rooms have tables and that's what I'm used to lol). The words you say are only part of effective communication, voice inflection, gestures, and visual aids help a lot with complex discussions.

Yeah we do zoom pairing sessions at times. But the last two days they've been intermittently available despite saying if I want to pair we can do it. So it's mostly been asynchronous chat on slack instead.

I hate the "can we just get on a call". It means you're going to continue to ignore standards and try to emergency must have promised it to so and so your way into garbage...
Had another one today. "Oh it's just this simple additional exceptions" when they could implement it in code they own... But then they'd have to own the garbage and remembering they added exceptions and everything.

But I already said that (as did someone else on the team) in chat. And we're way understaffed. So I don't have time for a call.
The problem is really that they're presenting a solution.
There is a better solution, it's just not as "easy" as they want. But it'll also actually help things the way they want, where their current approach won't in most cases.

My experience is usually I don't have time for an extended chat. Calls resolves things much more quickly, assuming you keep it on task.

The one thing chat has going for it is that it has a better memory than me, and I can read stuff at my own pace.

I tell people to email or message me all the time since I have a bad case of CRS and usually have multiple things going on at once.
