I've only had brief experiences driving Miatas, but I can say that once I turned the my first corner in one I knew that Miatas handle MUCH better than corollas, even in stock form.

However, you can't really compare the two since they are inherently different in suspension design, weight, dimensions, wheelbase, and overall size. The miata is it's own unique driving experience as an 86 is, and is well deserving of it's own cult status.

The biggest difference between the two lies within the rear suspension, and wheel base. Miatas just grip better overall. but once they step out into oversteer they are notoriously harder to control than in a corolla due to it's diminuitive size. A corolla known for being more of a WOT car, as you basically just have to floor it to make enough power to carry a drift, and to keep within the power band when driving grip.

As for power, in a straight line a Miata would most likely get ahead, but sensory-wise, i'd go for the screaming underpowered 4AGE in my corolla over the noise a miata puts out.
Then again, there's something to be had about driving a miata with the top down through the twisties... you feel much more connected to the road and your surroundings.

If I were in a perfect world, i'd honestly have both sitting in my garage.

We are sitting 20 years later, everything can be improved. In my opinion what is nice about older vehicles such as my corolla, is that you can change basically everything in the car safety wise and not get fix it tickets. If you want a nardi, you put in a nardi, where as with my subaru you leave the stock wheel unless you want to be written up or have that possibility.

That's it right there. If you were looking for flaws within the AE86, thats what needs to be changed.

Those and of course, the chassis rigidity.

The AE86 chassis was really ahead of its time back in the 80's the LSD, 4age's TVIS & more was right for its time, If toyota will make another 4 cylinder rwd sports coupe im sure they will make sure that its going to fit in the 21st century's technology. I'm sure it will have a double wish bone suspension, independent rear suspension, optional 4 piston calipers front and 2 piston rear calipers. but as a owner of a 25yrs old corolla what i really had hard time fixing and preventing problem was some of the weak major parts like the rear axles and the T50 transmission I had to de tune my motor so it wont break more parts. hopefully this time toyota will makes them stronger, im sure back in the 80's engineers didnt expect that a ae86 will be powered by a 200+ hp motors

I was inside my AE86 last night, one thing I dont see much in modern cars is the stock oil pressure gauge, I hope this car will have it also

i don't think there's much need for a gauge, honestly. while doing any kind of performance driving, you're not gonna be looking at a gauge, and certainly not looking for particular readings on that gauge.

if anything, a warning light in combination with an aftermarket gauge (maybe a peak/hold/warning gauge) orientated so that the ideal needle position is at 12 o'clock is probably the best solution.

i swear i'm not just upping my post count, but...

i read the first page of this thread now, and if you guys want to talk about oversteery, underpowered cars, MKII MR2s with the 5SFE take the cake, IMO. the turbos aren't underpowered, but they oversteer just as much, if not more.

I have to say, I had to join simply b/c of Dolphin and oldschooltoys posts. You guys do understand what makes the heart and soul of an AE86.

Personally, I really hope the best for the FT-86 and that it meets our expectations. I do not ever see it being able to replace the AE86 (i dont think anything could do that) but it leaves big shoes to be filled. I find very little fault in the AE86 besides the A/C.

Toyota seems to recognize the core values that made the ae86 what it is. (This is evident by re-evaluating the target buyer to make it the same as the GT-S was intended) I'm crossing my fingers I may end up owing a decent car that is newer than 1987.....

Agreed with the MR2's being harder to drive being mid engine, short wheel base. Getting into oversteer with an AW11 and controlling it would be far more difficult than with an AE86.

Yeah the spats look awesome. Took 5 minutes to do. Its going to look real nice once I get yhe diffuser on and it will complete the look when I get a lip and skirts

One thing for sure hasn't changed...the FUN FACTOR! total win!
On the OP, I was hoping the FT86 had a dynamic lumbar spine support like the AE86 had... I still search for it every once in a while!
