Seems like another nail in the coffin of the losers that say, “just use what the manufacturer recommends. They know best.” Anytime someone asks what oil they should use.

Well... technically speaking, Subaru says its ok with 5w30. They just don't say its for track use.

I'm not sure if everyone else is seeing this, but at my last dealership oil change they used 5W30 without me asking or saying anything about it. Makes me wonder if they just did that themselves, or if there has been a service manual update which isn't reflected in the documents the public sees.

They also used 5w30 for my first oil change... and overfilled by a quart. So I asked them on the next visit. They said no no, that must have been a mistake. Then I saw their 12yr old mechanic and knew it could not have been deliberate :-) (Probably selected the wrong menu option on their oil feed system.)

Official manual currently on Subaru's website still states 0w20 is the specified weight. 5w30 to be used in an emergency or top up but to immediately go back to 0w20 ASAP.

That's what I was familiar with and found it interesting the dealership didn't follow that. I'm thankful they didn't without me asking. I am wondering if a bulletin was issued to the dealer service departments or an update was made to other documentation they use which we might not see.

Did you confirm with service dept whether they actually used 5w30? Or are you just going off the service invoice info? I ask because same with me so I asked, they said 0w20 was used, the 5w30 is just a default value in the computer system.

Interesting. I didn't because previous invoices all showed 0W20. I'll have to ask the next time.

Precisely why I asked for cliffs when I clicked the video and saw the length.

Yep they did it for me last winter. This June I came for an oil change and said you guys put 5w-30 last time, can you do it again? And they were like sure
When I came home I also put about 0.5L more in there

You guys mentioned the use of M1 FS 0W-40 and how it may be too thick for colder temperatures, I think driving at the fact the flow might not be good.

Are you still cautioning not to use 0W40 or what’s the official stance? I’m assuming it’s not enough testing so can’t comment.

Love the content. Watched both videos fully and learned alot.
