Random picture of a SSM BRZ that I parked behind. Never realized how lowered I was until now...I kinda like it!

3/5/14 - Leaky cam plate
As I was inspecting the undercarriage today, I noticed the drop of oil hanging precariously above my over pipe. I won't address this issue with an aftermarket replacement just yet. I feel like a new gasket will remedy the situation. ![]() |

Just realized I'm in the car with you on one of those autocross pics. Sucks about that oil leak. :/

Hell yeah I'll be racing. The 30th happens to be my weekend on at work but I'm going to try and get it switched with someone. I'll assume you'll be there?

3/12/14 - Fixing the cam plate leak (1st try)
Read up on this issue and decided to take a crack at addressing the small drip from the cam plate, rather than taking it in to the dealer only to have them do exactly what I did while I sit in the waiting room worrying about technicians scratching my paint. Pretty simple fix if you're willing to put in some work. All I did was pop the (3) 12mm bolts from the plate. Then with a flat head screwdriver or something similar, pry the plate towards the rear of the car. It takes a surprising amount of effort to break the existing silicon seal. After that, degrease the plate and mounting surface with brake clean and scrape the silicon off the plate with a razor. ![]() ![]() Next (and this is potentially where I messed up) is re-installation. I used Permatex Red RTV on the mounting surface (cylinder head) only and then carefully guided the cleaned plate into place. First bolt to go on was the top, since it's easiest to access while standing over the fender, then slipped underneath to thread in the bottom 2 bolts leaving a little wiggle room for the RTV to begin to solidify for at least 24 hours before torquing to spec (12 lb-ft) ![]() Now, what I probably should've done was to silicon the plate AND the mounting surface to assure a consistent bead, but we'll see if this method hols up. If not, it's fairly simple to redo. |
