Nope.

If you're serious, I can assure you that most to all America companies who handle such data are at most doing the bare minimum required to check the boxes associated with any regulations (government or industry based) required for handling that data, often without any effort to understand or act upon the underlying intent of those regulations.

Also they're probably selling it to any other company that they can loosely consider a "business partner".

I was just joking. Sometimes it feels kind of odd being dwarfed by your neighbour. It may only be funny if you're a Canuck. Maybe not lol

Thanks for the info. (pun intended)

I had a feeling you brought the cheeky monkey but I was too busy personally relating to Scoob's observation.

funny for us, not so much for canuck's, is going to be the new VOC restrictions going into effect in 2024...

WD debunked that. Apparently, they have a new formula and I can't imagine VOC limits would be any tougher here than CA.

We generally "copy paste" a lot of what our big brother to the south is doing. Makes sense in a lot of cases. We have common goals for the most part.

Insurance companies offer a discount for safe drivers that involves downloading an app to your phone that tracks your driving. The info is "public" which means it can be sold. I imagine they'll make more than the discount when it's purchased.

I figured, but rambled for some reason. It has been a long couple of... years. Sorry about that. The US may get much of the global attention, but Canada will always have poutine.

Haha, no worries, it was good info. I figure most of this information is useless to anyone except marketing companies.

ETA I think poutine is gross. However, my wife likes it.

Tesla insurance changes based on driving habits. High risk behavior raises your rates because they know what you are doing when you speed, cut people off or drive too close, and good drivers get discounts.

If they sold my geolocation data then they would do exactly what with that data? Know I work at a hospital? Know I went to Chipotle last week? Know what city I live in to give me local listings in ads on FT86club.com?

The problem isn't legitimate uses of data by an actual company. The problem is protection of that data from illegitimate usage. For example, jealous ex wants to know where your GF/wife is to somehow harm her. She can just go buy information on where she is likely to be, or even real time info. And it doesn't have to be bought from Google/Tesla/Apple/etc., or their customers, or even their customers customers because the data isn't well guarded.

You would be surprised about the kinds of geographic maps people's geotagged tweets have shown up on...

Pattern of life info can be dangerous in the hands of someone who is not looking out for your best interest. Which is 99.9...% of the population. And corporations. And your governments. And everyone else's governments.

Seems like someone doesn't need to do a whole lot to figure things out. Go to former residence. Go to the ex's work if he moved. Follow him home or get the license plate off his car to get his name and registered address from the DMV. Follow her to work. Look at her FB on where she lives and works. Ever seen Catfish? It isn't hard.

There are geotags on everything like you mentioned from Apple photos to posts on social media. People like a restaurant and post selfies and food pictures in real time. If the problem was even close to proportional to the possibilities/data then there would be rampant issues, but there is not.

Musk tried to stop pages tracking his airplane, even if it is publicly available information. Celebrities have houses that are known and part of tourist attractions. People know their name, DOB, address, family members, their DOBs and addresses. Outside of the paparazzi trying to make a buck, seems like they would be flooded with fans and creepers, but this just isn't the case. How many people hate Nancy Pelosi? But the only encounter was with a single weirdo breaking into her house and fighting with her husband.

I thinks the risks are overplayed, and it is delusional that someone thinks they can control how much stuff is out there.
