The notion makes sense, but there are five cars in my household - all 2012 or 2013 - and only two of them have mirrors that mount like this - the other three have the old-style shoe-glued-to-glass setup. Seems as though if it really was a regulatory requirement, they'd all be the same or similar.

I found this - http://www.nhtsa.gov/DOT/NHTSA/Vehic...TP-111-V00.pdf

Pertinent text seems to be:

(1) REQUIREMENTS (S5.1.2)

If the mirror is in the head impact area, the mounting shall deflect, collapse, or break away without leaving sharp edges when the reflective surface of the mirror is subjected to a force of 400 N (90 lb) in any forward direction that is not more than 45 degrees from the longitudinal direction.

So it seems as though breakaway is an option but not a requirement - collapse works too, and that seems to be how most cars are made; the link connecting the base to the mirror pivots downward and allows the assembly to collapse toward the glass.
Most manufacturers use a spring clip that deforms to allow the mirror assembly to depart its mounting. Same idea as a ski binding. Some may elect to go the deformation route but spring loaded detachment is preferred.

Apparently Honda, Mazda, and GM are not among them.

Got mine fixed for the 2nd time. Seems a lot more sturdy now though the part number on the invoice is for the old part not the new one. Hoping that's not the case and Subaru sent the new one. Time will tell I guess.

My BRZ is at the dealer right now for "the new fix" they said they have available for the homelink mirror mount issue. I will ask them what is new when I pick it up.

They also fixed my trunk noise gremlins. They have the parts for the fuel pump crickets on order too. I have to go back next week for that one.

Well, after a year owning the BRZ the homelink mirror that I got installed at the port began to rattle. I actually heard it before seeing it. I have a feeling that I've got what all of you guys had. Luckily, I got an appointment with Glendale Subaru in 2 weeks to have this and all the other stuff taken care of. I hate dealerships and if I could I'd never go to one, but in this case I have no other option. There's a recall so I MUST pay them a visit. I just hope it's not going to be painful, but I'm not holding my breath.

Which dealership did you go to? What kind of noises are you getting from your trunk? How bad are your crickets?

... 5 months later I've got the same problem again. It's interesting though, that they have a new part number. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow and see if they can fix it again. I'll have them fix it but not wash my car.

Timmons in long beach. The mirror is good now. The fuel pump is replaced and the cracking noises in the trunk are different than before but not gone. They used a "pinch weld" fix for the trunk they said. Not sure what that means but I will live with the sounds for now. They said no garranty on the trunk noise fix.
