Just test drove a friend's brand new 2018 gti. Not too impressed. The engine has tons of lag, and is super nonlinear.

It handles like a greased pig.

Toyobaru by a long shot, for me.

sure if you like a comfortable car that can sort of be driven for fun but not really, get a gti.

gti is the opposite of everything I want in a car. hell i think my yaris is a better drivers car than a gti.

I’m planning on test driving a new Golf R in the near future. The rave reviews made me wonder if this could be my FRS replacement. For $40k it’s not cheap but I’ll see if it’s worth it

I've owned precisely one front wheel drive car in my life and it was out of necessity. Never again.

The MK7 Golf R is an amazing machine. It really tries hard to make you forget it's not RWD. Almost pulls it off too.

For 40k it seems like a small fish in a huge pond of better choices.

As long as you never take it past 8/10ths I agree. It is an amazing DD with high limits. But once the limits are approached it is obviously not RWD.

Exactly. And even at the limit it dabbles with oversteer (I don't have experience with the non DCC version). Clearly AWD oversteer, but still oversteer.

It's the best thing we get until someone has the balls to build a RWD hot hatch.

For me the fun of the RWD element is what makes things like the GTI and Focus ST second choices to my 86... even if they have better interiors etc they just can’t make me smile anywhere near as quickly or easily.

I'm curious, what would you get for 40K new if you needed the 4 doors, the roomy hatch, and wanted something fast with good handling? It's a much better car than both the focus RS and the STI. Not sure if there's anything else.

Personally? For that cash I'd be driving a ctsv wagon, lol. Not new, but a better car for sure.

Ragging on the Golf R for its price and then suggesting a CTS V is rather contradictory no? Comparing new vs used is never fair to the new car. As for the Cadillac, besides being priced way out of the segment, it's not nearly as nimble as an AWD hot hatch. And then there's the interior .

I just said me personally. 40k will buy you a ton of decent vehicles. New for new there is always a CTR. Other cars like a Forester XT fit your criteria too and have more space. Mini cooper, fiat abarth.... the list is relatively long.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...-golf-r-page-3

Focus rs beat the golf r in car and drivers testing so... "much better" in what way....

Not nearly as nimble? Idk... the ctsv is a very capable vehicle even in wagon form. Then the interior.... just a great vehicle in every regard.

Golf r interior
