Maybe it's like some women when they are relating a problem - they don't want you to "fix" it, they just want you to listen to them -

There are two vents behind the rear bumper (1 on each side of the car, covered by black flaps) that relive cabin pressure when the doors are closed (take the bumper off, open a door then close the door, you'll see the flaps move.) I suspect this and similar issues may be related to these vents remaining open, possibly in conjunction with any under car exhaust leak either due to a fracture or a bad/leaky gasket. I recall mention of a TSB being put out by Subaru years ago regarding repair or replacement of these vent flaps to ensure they do not remain open when operating the vehicle. See if you or your dealer can locate this TSB, and/or install an updated set of flaps and report back on if that fixes this issue. |

Something does not make sense as newer cars are designed to have positive pressure inside the cabin. Opening the windows will change things as there can be outside air moving around the car depending on speed. But still air should not be coming in through the one way flaps in the back.

Found the TSB - apparently it was put out due to potential for exhaust to enter the cabin: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...22&postcount=1 |

Regarding the TSB. It is a Subaru TSB. I have a '17 Toyota 86. Bought it new Aug. '17. I've had this issue from day one. When the A/C is in recirc mode there is fume smell in the car. Complained to dealer, they didn't find anything. So I don't use recirc mode. I've searched online for a TSB from Toyota for this issue and can't find one. I'm past 36k miles now, but I'm going to take the Subaru bulletin to the dealer and see what they say. Don't know when though.

So I took the car to Toyota and showed them the Subaru TSB. Long story short, the service manager honored the Subaru TSB. Thanks Scott at Treasure Coast Toyota, Stuart, FL.
