I don't think people here ever saw it as thing we needed to do until COVID19. I probably won't even leave the house now if I have a cold but 3 years ago I might not shake hands with people but other than that I would more or less go about my normal life.

But like, as mentioned previously, Asian countries have worn masks for years to prevent sharing germs during hay fever season, flu, etc. It's a normalized cultural concept there.

So then it makes me wonder.

If someone suggests wearing masks there is effective, but refuses to wear them here implying they're totally unnecessary, then what makes them different from us?

Are they beneath us? That they make that choice to "not be free' and wear masks? "We shouldn't sink to their level."

Not to mention the recent anti-Asian sentiments flaring up across the country.

Maybe this is the wrong thread for this kind of discussion, but it's honestly interesting to think about.
Consideration is partially cultural.

https://www.cnet.com/news/world-cup-...hank-you-note/

Masks might become more common after all this is over with. People may realize that wearing a mask might be the difference of avoiding getting a cold before a scheduled vacation versus being sick on vacation, or it could become a cultural thing that not wearing a mask when sick is seen as rude or selfish.

For many Americans, they see a mask as a form of social control, or as a suppression of speech or a suppression of liberties. Many Americans believe a mask doesn't do anything to prevent COVID, or they believe COVID isn't real or isn't that bad to warrant wearing a mask.

That's when the American idea of liberty is grossly misunderstood. A place has to be safe for everyone in order to be free. These people are free at the possible expense of other's wellbeing or lives.

I thought I'd better add a poll, just curious to see which jabs we are all taking.. I have kept it simple ie not included the possible second jab variance, we can add more as we become aware of new ones...

Georgia's Governor announces rollback of most of the restrictions around gatherings. Also, the hospital system where I work is down to 4 COVID inpatients in our system down from the peak of where 30 to 50% of our beds were COVID related patients.

I love the 3.5 ft restrictions for restaurant and bar seating. Pull out those calipers.

As I told my wife, I'm not sure if this is the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning. I guess time will tell.

Ontario just went into 30 day full lockdown as a result of a third wave as the UK variant takes hold.
We have a lot of vaccinations to go but we need the product to inject people. Toronto starts age 60 and down tomorrow and most of the province is still 70 and down. The majority of hospitalizations are age 20-39 now. It shows that targeted vaccinations are effective but also that people working in essential work and factories are getting it while rich people stay home. I admit I fall into the latter group. Maybe some of the anti maskers anti vaxxers can come on up and party.

I wouldn't say that many Americans' idea of liberty is misunderstood - I'd say it's distorted. Many of my fellows seem to think "1) that Liberty means I can do anything I want to do and that any restrictions the scope of "anything I want" is a fundamental Constitutional violation; and 2) that applies only to me."

It used to be the case that some defined liberty as the freedom to swing my arm as long as it does not contact your nose. Some us seem to have abandoned that. We're more than happy to allow the contents of our sinuses to blow out straight into others noses and any attempt to stop them is met with defiance.

TEXAS AND MISSISSIPPI CASES DECREASE AFTER MASK MANDATES LIFTED

Texas and Mississippi lifted their mask mandates at the beginning of March. Democrats and media of course framed this as stupid Republicans risking lives. In the nearly three weeks since the mask mandates were lifted, Texas and Mississippi's new case levels have decreased.

In Texas from March 10, when Governor Abbott's order went into effect, to the present:
New COVID cases dropped by more than 35%.
The weekly mortality average dropped nearly 50%.

In Mississippi from March 3rd to the present:
New Covid cases dropped by more than 57%.
The weekly mortality average dropped 65%.

Compare this to New York and Michigan, states that still have mask mandates and saw increases in cases.
In NY, new cases increased by 7% from March 3 to March 30.
In Michigan, new cases increased by nearly 300% from March 3 to March 30.

Florida never had a mask mandate.
Since the start of the pandemic, March 2020, there have been 33,337 deaths and 2.05M cases out of a population of 21.5 million.
By contrast, New York has had 49,790 deaths and 1.87M cases out of a population of 19.5 million.
Florida also has more seniors, at 20.9% of the population.
Compared to 16.9% of New York. SOURCES: US Census
So New York has had a mask mandate, an aggressive lockdown, a smaller population, AND fewer vulnerable seniors than Florida, yet has more deaths.

What's a "UK variant"? The French are saying the same thing that they've been hit by a UK variant.. We did experience a variant but I think it was either South African or from Brazil.

Anyway, things are improving here, lockdowns easing, talk of vaccine passports is causing a ripple. I had to carry a little yellow vaccination record when I was traveling overseas, can't see what the fuss is about. However, they should not be expecting workers serving the public (shops, bars and restaurants) to police whether someone is carrying a passport or not.

Welp, I signed up for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine on Monday. My wife is a pharmacist so I'm going to go get stabbed by her.

So now it's going to be "masks cause covid infections?" I've seen that one trotted out before. You are definitely NOT helping your credibility on this particular topic.

Variant B.1.1.7 originating in the UK has taken over here as the original strain numbers continue to dwindle. It is believed to be 1.5 x more contagious and 1.5 x higher mortality rate than the OG strain. And its taking down younger people.

I'm 56 and taking no chances. Won't be vaccinated for a while yet. Lost my father in the 2nd wave so I know how real this is.

Brazil and South African are different mutated variants. Brazil is a giant pool to create more and more mutations which is worrisome.

Stay safe, and away from the crowds.. My wife and I have had the jabs and we are still maintaining the same regimes and will keep to the routines untill such a time when the risks have been completely dissolved..
