First off, I’m very happy this car was made at all, the fact they still build these types of cars for us should be commended, especially with a manual transmission.

As you may know from my previous posts, I sold my Camaro SS to get either a current gen or the new gen if I waited.

What I like:
1) Still under 2900 lbs.
2) Chassis improvements
3) New motor, with a lesser torque dip
4) Improved track mode

What I dislike:
1) the front bumper (headlights look fine, not a fan of the front bumper personally.
2) The side skirts/rocker panels. I feel a cleaner aftermarket design would fit the cleaner lines of the rest of the vehicle.

In short, overall it’s a “good enough” design, but if I had a 2017-20 86/BRZ I’d be happy with what I have and wait. If I had an early FRS etc with high mileage it may differ.
Stock for stock I feel the 1st Gen is a far cleaner design. No question.

With that said this is by no means a “bad” looking car, but would take more work to look “clean” to me than the current models.

This will be my 3rd car, so I’m going to wait to see the Toyota version, and DRIVE them both before I decide.

Chassis improvements etc sound great on paper, but until I actually drive the car I’m not sold as I expected to be.

I’m going to wait it out for another year until I can experience the car first hand.

Again, very happy with what I see on paper, but to me the styling on the first gen is a far cleaner design stock.

Opinions are a good thing, can’t please everyone but can’t get mad at people for stating their honest opinion.
Wait longer. Wait until they are out in showrooms to test drive and make a better decision. If possible, drive both, but that'll be hard.

What I’m going to do. Again it will be my 3rd car so there is no rush.

Not as sold as I thought I’d be. I don’t let excitement ruin my decision however.

Currently don’t see enough to 100% buy, but will wait further judgement until both models are revealed and I drive them both.

From what I see it looks like a great drivers car, but it’s hard to trust “factory” drivers opinions, I need to drive the car hard to truly get an honest opinion.

Again nobody should feel the need to sell their current cars anytime soon, the longer you wait the better.

found a closeup.

it might be a separate piece, but the formed sheet metal edge indicates that it's very much an integral part of the trunk lid.

on a second look, even worse, the third brake light and camera are integrated into the spoiler, which makes it triple-hard to remove...

it's very apparent that an entirely different design team took the reins on the redesign.

it's really sort of an odd business decision if one thinks about it because the car was never a horrific seller to normally justify such a drastic styling change for a 2nd generation.

most of the complaints centered around it's driving characteristics, very few i ever saw pointed to styling...

NO....just NO... that front end all the way to the front of door looks like a tacked on, badly styled body kit... very disjointed from the styling of door to rear of the car. The added on extreme rocker panel is to try and tie it into the rear forcibly... simply doesn't work. Rocket bunny kit would be a huge improvement over whatever that is supposed to be.

Love the 1st gen styling... but this thing can only be salvaged with a complete aftermarket rework... I would love to be able to unsee this/wipe from memory. Rear of car isn't great... but nowhere as bad as front. Bringing the beltline up and thus reducing the window height on the car really wrecked the styling language leading to the issues with front and rear. When the shorter and more squashed body of an ND miata looks sleeker and sexier than a new upcoming BRZ something is seriously wrong...

And then there's that interior...

Maybe the world will end before the '22 BRZ is released and we'll be spared from having to see it on the roads...

Yes I’m the same, especially with a manual transmission. I’m looking forward to eventually sitting in the 2nd gen to see how it all feels. The seats look like an upgrade also, but I’m coming from the FR-S, which is like the bottom rung of twin interiors. And I’m kind of crazy, I really love the interior of my car. Everything is in the perfect place, the seats are good, and the materials (in my opinion) are a step up from other basic Toyota interiors. I’ve also really liked the tach and speedometer on the FR-S over the other versions. I’m not sure how much I will like the digital gauge cluster on the 2nd gen.

they really went with the "hey... let's connect the tail lights with this awkward, uninteresting horizontal BAR, that'll really get em going !" design???

first mod trunk delete

they really spoiled us with the v1.2 styling. both 86 and brz, super sharp.

It's all subjective in the end, I remember when the cars first came out people dumped all over it especially when the ft86 proto was damn near a perfect design.

I wish the rockers were a little less pronounced, and the front grille opening was bigger like the test mule, the lifted grille gives it a cuv look. But, I definitely appreciate the functional design, no blocked off black faux grilled (type r), no brz mouthguard, no fake fender vents, no mazda rx8 fender arch.

I can see the arguments about the back, but I never liked the shape of the current gen taillights, and I hate all the oem spoilers except for the trd lip, I'm a dovetail guy so this is right up my alley.

I prefer an analog gauge but I just hated how cheap the frs gauge cluster looked with that truck like grey pattern and obviously plastic tach surround. This new gauge doea feel like a bit of cost savings considering how small it is. Still, it's an improvement.

Stop trying to justify your old out of date car.

Tuners should like it. In fact, it should do quite well in power gains with that kind of compression. All we have to hope for, is that nothing was cheaped out too much in the engine for long term reliability.

Are you sure about this? We know peak HP occurs at 7,000 rpm. Car and Driver claims the redline is 7,500 rpm.

Moving on, I don’t get all this drama over the front end. Sure, its different than the first gen and Subaru played it safe. But ugly? Not to me. I find it far more attractive than a Miata. And the rest of the car is a delight, especially having a wider rear track than front track. Balanced and aggressive. I am excited to drive one.

Less than 100 lb, sourced from Edmunds. If the distribution is right, should be unnoticeable.
