I saw one of these at the Marin Speed Shop. It was ok. I sat on a Sport 1000 that was yellow, and it was much more aggressive than my Monster. In fact, it stretched me out more than a super sport like the Pangale. I wasn't a fan. The tank is huge too, but they look cool, especially modified. After Tron, like after FnF, prices for these classics doubled. It was a little silly.

When these came out I really wanted one, but the more I looked at them, sat on them, and really added up what the bike really was, I just couldn't get onboard. The styling just isn't...quite right. It's just a basic 85 bhp air-cooled DS1000 motor with so-so fuel economy, and a smallish fuel tank, despite it's intrusive profile. It has the cheapest two piston calipers Brembo makes. It does have nice lightweight rims made by Excel, and the solo tail should be lighter in theory. But despite all that, it still weighed 425 pounds dry. So, you were paying 15+ grand for limited production and limited spares, basically. I'm glad I stuck with my Aprilia.

I thought they looked pretty bad-ass, just not worth the $$$$$.

I had an '03 Tuono for a while, what's yers?
I'm still on my '00 SV650, love that bike... I have an electrified one too, but it's been dead-Fred for years :P

Back to 750SS, for me this was an era when European and British bikes were antiquish and, um, *quaint* compared to the Japanese bikes. A TZ750, now *that* is an exotic bike from 1974!

I have a 2003 Falco R. I love it, but I do find myself riding my 1975 BMW more and more often...it makes all the right noises and has the right feel at speeds more friendly to my license. The Falco is a great bike for racking up miles on the slab though... Did you ever bring your Tuono to the IMOC show up in Sturbridge? I try to go every year..

In 1974, Japanese production bikes were starting to ramp up, but they were still heavy, wallowing nightmares when you threw a corner at them or wanted to stop. I think you're mixing categories of bikes a bit; a TZ is a race bike, as is the MV 500-4 you mentioned earlier as well. The Duc 750 SS is a road-legal production bike, with an eye on gentlemen's racing, as was the Ferrari GTO, which is why they tend to be compared. They made 401 of the SS to satisfy the homologation rules at that time (keep in mind what the letters 'GTO' stand for... ). I think of something like the Ferrari 250 P or LM when talking about TZs or the 500-4...still available to privateers, but much more limited production, and track-only.

That said, the TZs were a dominating force through the 70s, even on dirt tracks. Wicked sounding, for sure.

Yeh, I went to the STurbridge thing a few times I loved the Tuono, but in the end it was too tall and I didn't need 1000cc torque/power, so sold it and kept the SV.

True. In the early 2000s I bought a mint CB550F Super Sport (the one with the swoopy 4-1 exhaust). IMO that bike LOOKED great, but it handled like a barge... But 70s Euro bikes to me just look like poorly-evolved bikes from the early 60s.

Yeah, good point... BUT, the 750SS looks, to me, so pedestrian, even in the context of it being 1974. Contrast that with what a GTO looked like in the context of 1962!

I need a 4-cylinder 2-stroke race bike in my life...

Agreed. I got a Monster 796 instead. It is closer to 375 dry.

Multi-cyl 2 strokes are awesome. I sold my sled a couple of seasons ago and am still regretting it...1050cc triple/triple. And another friend has several vintage 'Cats, one with an 800cc JLO 4 cylinder in it...crazy sounding.

That's what the wife got in trade for her Indiana. A brand new M796 ABS with full Termignoni exhaust, DP custom low seat and IoM '78 body panels.
The attached photo was used in the USDesmo calendar.

Yes they are, I've had over a dozen. The attached photos shows my '73 RD 350 Street Cafe' Racer and my '86 NS400R production racer.
(Sorry for getting off topic.)

VERY cool NS400R! Back in the mid 90s I was shopping used bikes and it came down to an '85 FJ1100, or an '86 RG500 Gamma for basically the same money...I went with the 'safe' purchase and got the FJ. I kick myself for that now...

When I decided to go vintage racing a few years back, an NS400R woulda been my first choice! But pragmatism and reality won out, I got an FZR400

I'd be thinking more along the lines of Britten V1000 which was a thoroughbred race bike built to win and take on Ducatis... and it did. Quite a piece of engineering too.

The FJ was *surely* a better day-to-day real-world bike to ride. But still, DAMN, sometimes it's better so suffer a bit to have the awesomeness...

Although BaT shows the auction ended with the reserve not met I understand that the seller did accept a private offer of $175K for his green frame 750. I think both parties are happy.
