Rapid clicking noise 2.5-4K rpm

Needing some help.. just got my car back from a shop (replaced engine ‘13 to ‘15) and it’s making a clicking noise from around 2500-4000 rpm and I get a faint smell of exhaust. I read online that it could be the exhaust manifold gasket, but wanted a 2nd opinion if anyone had this issue before. Also, would I need to re-tune the ecu?

I would attach a video, but there isn’t a way to on the forum.

Well, Jreyes96, the first thing I would do it to take the car back to the shop that replaced the engine and ask them to check it out and fix it.

As far as the ECU, as long as they used the one that came with the new engine and the car is running good, I reckon it's good to go.

Does it do it when you rev sitting still? Or more prominent under load while driving?

Yeah, that’s definitely the plan. I was just trying to get an idea of what problem I may be looking at.

It’s only during acceleration. It’s only around 2500-4000 rpm, it gets louder the closer I get to 4000. It’s also got a slightly rough idle.

Don't drive it any more. Have towed back to the shop. The less mileage the better off you will be.

Clicking 2.5-4K is much more extensive than I’ve dealt with, however......

All of the 4 cylinder Subaru’s I own, all of the 4 cylinder Subaru’s I’ve driven, and all of the 4 cylinder Subaru’s I’ve worked on, twerk and click mildly between 1.5-2.5k depending on which specific engine designation it is. It’s that good old Subaru engine noise, separate from the exhaust noise. (Torsional imbalance? Harmonic resonance? Idk...)

So, in the event that it checks out with a clean bill of health, this is just something we deal with.
