it was either something simple like the battery not connected, or he died from posting on the internet.

Don't test a car battery with your tongue.

Correct.
The right way to do it is with a combo wrench.

I am going to presume from the lack of response from the OP (I feel so used) that he just had a flat battery.

Yes when they just go away it means they missed something simple and are embarrassed to let us know. Not knowing we have all been there before.

You feel drained? Flat? Lacking energy? Need some lead in your pencil?

I wish I had $1 for every post reading "my car won't start but the lights still work so it isn't the battery" that I have responded to over three car forums and roughly 25 years. The simple concept that starting a car requires many more volts and amps than turning on the lights or head unit seems to be so elusive that I could probably buy a Porsche for cash by now!

And making the point that during troubleshooting, one needs to use the proper tools such as a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery with the car completely off first to get a reference voltage, then with the ignition in the ON position, then turn the headlights on, then during a cranking attempt while continuously monitoring the voltage reading.

Oftentimes the reading will appear normal at first, but as you progress to the next steps, the voltage drops down too far in order to start the car.

My car sometimes sits for weeks at a time without running so I have a trickle charger if I think it's going to sit for a week or more and I'll hook that up to the battery until I go to start it up again.

Does anyone know if there is a minimum voltage requirement that the ECU must see in order for it to allow a crank attempt to be made? Like a low voltage safety? And does it apply to both key start and push-button start cars?

The young @Tcoat walks into the local corner garage/gas station. The old timers are sitting around chewing tobacco and ask him if they could help him. Tcoat, rubbing is sore wrist and arm, asks "why is it that every time I go to start my automobile, the crank kicks back and hurts my wrist and arm"?

The one ol boy, wearing bib overalls, leans over, spits tobacco into a coffee can and asks "do you set the spark (full retard position) before you attempt to crank start it?"

Tcoat, being defensive, blurts out "are you calling me a retard?" The old boy sticks another wad of tobacco in his mouth and says "nooooo not YOU, the spark advance lever", as he

Young Tcoat - oh, ya, ................ now, is the spark advance lever supposed to be all the way down or all the way up?

The one ol boy turns to his buddies and says "in the last 30 years, that if he had a dime for every kid that came around here and asked that question, he would have enough money to buy a brand new Stutz Bearcat" -
