Random Thoughts - Part III The Search for Spark (No Politics)

Once a month we get a nasty gram regarding the last invoices of the prior month and telling us all about online bill pay... except their online bill pay portal is always down.

My response back is always "I'd love to pay you online, but you will not let me!".

UPS update: called again and got them to send over the commercial invoice while on the phone "well sir you need to wait for the rest of the documents from us, like the B-15 form". In the back of my mind I'm thinking "the B-15 form, the one the border office creates for me when I hand them the commercial invoice? Yeah, I'm sure I will be waiting for that one for a while from you."

I’ve had tons of issues with FedEx freight too. I can see their local hub from my office window. They would do things like delay shipments due to weather when it was fine out or say we were not open for delivery. When I would tell them that I can literally see their sign from where I am sitting I would usually get a call back from the terminal saying the actual reason was the trailer hadn’t been unloaded yet Their main hub is about an hour away and is always backed up, I have had stuff sit their for 7-10 days because they can’t get to the trailer. The worst was earlier this year we sent one pallet to a customer in Canada. We got a customs inspection fee for like 500 bucks. When we asked for more documentation on it the NMFC didn’t even match our shipment, it was for pellet guns. Tooks us months to get that squared away with getting past due notices. Logistics is a nightmare, even worse with YRC going under.

I don't know about now but for the first couple decades after USSR, DHL was the only carrier that could be trusted with shipping anything of value to Hungary..

DHL is oddly good at certain things.

Why is the Dutch Marine knot considered inferior to the standard Bowline? It's my favorite go-to. I like the working end outside the loop.

I just learned the regular bowline. I didn't know knots were universally superior or inferior to each other.

I'm more of a round peg square hole kind of guy so for me it is opposing half hitches and done. Too tight? Cut with knife. I never have to retie my shoes.

Only difference is the rabbit goes around the tree the opposite direction before going back into its hole. I think there are knot snobs just like any other types of snob.

My favorite pair of tongs broke today

The hundred thousand pounds of steel we worked together, the cans of soup we have heated, the bread we tried to toast, all the times I have used them to point at someone and tell them to get out of the shop. All gone............

You must sing Tongs for the Memories in their honor.
