Correct so one would expect to see a certain loyalty towards the brand. This would be true, I guess, of any brand forum you went to. Also taking a position then backing up that pov with valid arguments does not make one "protective".

What do you base this statement upon? "wipe the floor" suggests to me a large difference but looking at the on paper specs the cars look quite similar. I'm sure that a set of decent tyres on the 86 would make a difference (and I appreciate that swapping tyres would make the 86 not "stock"). Also omitted from your hypothesis is driver skill and mass.

the clio comes alot more circuit racing ready than the 86 which comes more designed to slide - eco tyres, soft front suspension etc..

anyway.. i bought an 86, and i will love it, but the clio isnt a bad car, its a pretty good little hatch, i prefer the 86 though.

back in feb i test drove the then new RS250 megane cup trophee whatever. i really liked it but i found i dont want to invest so much money on a car that will never get the tail out (which is a bit fun).

i would like to buy a megane RS265 for my girlfriend at some point, that way i can enjoy both

Very nice m0nty! I'm coming to the 86 from a Honda past, namely Type-R and Type-S Integras, and I can tell you a lot of the Honda guys have a great respect for all the Renault Sport cars.

After Honda lost the plot, Renault was the only manufacturer besides Mazda's MX-5 to offer a light weight, handling-focused package. Well, there is Lotus, but then we are talking over twice the price range.

I was looking at getting the Clio or the RS250 AGP earlier this year, but ended up with the 86 in April. They are great cars and will no doubt bring a smile to your face. Enjoy!

I often tell my wife (english is not her 1st language) that the english language is such a tricky slippery thing. I'm sorry but what was I thinking when I read this:

They are seriously sorted pieces of kit
If you haven't driven one, don't knock them
They have more mid range punch than the 86 and handle like all get out
The only reason I am not getting a Megane RS265 is that I don't need that much power & grip on the road to have fun
My post didn't say the renaults are shit, it didn't say they aren't capable?? It didn't even target them?? If you read it, i was saying that there are jsut as many, if not more, bad and unsporty (it is now a word :P) fwd vehicles as there are rwd vehicles in response to someone saying most rwd are shit
Of course they are faster in a straight line. Same power, less weight. Of course they are faster around a track. less weight, racing suspension, racing brakes.
What's your point? If you added the same parts to an 86, it would be just as good. Not saying better, but just as good

Off topic I know but..... My delivery date has been brought forward from April to beginning of March. Shopping list is on standby. Am I excited? Yes, I do believe I am.

*sigh*

But then it wouldn't be stock. You could put a set off semi slicks on the Clio and it goes faster again. Your point is moot because straight out off the box neither car had those.

Anyway. This thread is fucked now. I guess we now have two spam threads.

I'm not sure what the difference is if the manufacturer does something or the owner does something. Is changing tyres a modification? Brake pads? Brake fluid? Where do you draw the line? Look at the number of performance parts for the Clio 200. It would seem there are many people who "aren't happy" with stock either.

Most of you people hating on Monty's purchase are acting like the people who looked down on the 86 because of its weak performance numbers.

Shouldn't judge Monty's purchase if you haven't driven the car. Saying the car is rubbish because it is FWD is also a very very mistaken argument.
