Road to Hana in Maui is sketch. I’m sure there are worse, but maybe less traveled.

Driving the northern coast of Ireland where they post a blank speed limit of 60mph with lots of sections not wide enough for two cars to pass was pretty sketchy. Add about 500 cyclists on a bike tour mixed in and I earned my Guinness..es that night.

yea, the dragon is just too publicized, too well-known, too well policed to be that great of a road. it's interesting because of how many sharp turns there are in such a dense area. much more fun after business hours when the shops close down, the troopers go home, and the locals come out--was temporarily following a chevy cobalt(non-ss), subaru forester, and miata, but they were all going much faster than i was comfortable with...

i definitely had more fun following a guy in a nissan frontier bombing through a few random backroads, he was likely just on his way to work... later there was the ford expedition lady i ended up going the same way with for a little while. neither went under 40 in a 20...

You're not wrong about the detractions above, but that's not the road's fault. It's truly an amazing road. Don't hate the road because it's popular. Just plan ahead and "attack" it early on a week day.

The thing about the Dragon is 1) zero intersecting roads or driveways along it's entire route and 2) there are a LOT of pull offs and "civilians" are more likely to pull over for you there than anywhere else.

Sure there are a lot of other great roads in NC and TN. But almost all of them will have you driving past someone's front yard and/or intersect with other streets. Nobody wants to be that a**hole squealing tires mere yards from someone's home. And almost anyone else you get stuck behind on the more obscure roads will have zero interest in letting you by.

I believe this is the one i had in mind. I think top gear did a segment with this with their cheap off roader episode. (old broken FJ40 land cruiser, surprisingly reliable Land Rover Defender, and one of the other smaller japanese mini off rodaers, the Suzuki Samurai, Jimny or something)

Agree. Just after dawn on a weekday was pretty awesome. Came across one other car going up, and they pulled off pretty quick. A half hour later though it was pretty nuts.

you're right

i got somewhat chaffed with how popular it's become... i had gone a number of times back around 2010, i'd be the only one in the store, might see 3-4 people all day out on the road. went back in 2015, and the store was 4 people deep everywhere, and the road was like a conveyor belt of cars...

it is an interesting road, just not interesting enough to deal with all the people for me
