Painted 86 emblems (side panel)
I keep looking for a step by step on the forum but have had no luck... for those of you that have done this how did you reapply adhesive after removal of emblem? Do i have to buy brand new emblems with adhesive in order to paint them?

If you're referring to the "86-pistons" things, and just wish to paint the background, one person on this forum had his sister paint them red, with nail polish, while on the car ...

Just cover around the emblems and paint over after them
Might want to do it in a garage to reduce wind |

3M Automotive Attachment Tape.
http://www.autogeek.net/3m-auto-tape.html I don't think a DIY is really necessary...

^Dunno if you're linking that as just a sample page but you can also easily acquire that at Walmart, automotive section.
There's also the even beefier/stronger exterior mounting tape, which is 1" width, and should be at the hardware section with all the tapes. If not, Home Depot. Same color and everything, but way stickier. Overkill for a garnish though, but just throwing it out there.

Clay bar works on spray paint iirc. Knew someone from another forum got her car maliciously vandalized/spray painted and it all came off clean with a clay bar.

Painting these is super easy, I painted mine about 9 months ago.
1) Use dental floss and a thin PLASTIC pointed object to remove the emblem (I used a thin piece of plastic from packaging material and cut a point into it). The dental floss should help cut the tape until you hit one of the pegs used to position the emblem on. Then pull back on the emblem a bit with your finger nails and start slicing and poking at the tape with the plastic piece until the emblem pulls off the car. 2) After pulling the emblem off, I didn't have to use any chemicals to remove the remaining adhesive. Simply rubbed at the adhesive with my thumb till it balled up and came off. I used isopropyl alcohol on the front emblem tape when I rebadged that the second time. 3) Use 3M tape on the back of the emblem and a razon blade to trim it down. Keep protective backing on tape till after painting. Apply tape before you paint since you will need to trim with a razor blade. 4) Used Krylon Fusion (satin black I think) to paint the emblem per instructions on can. So far, the Krylon has held up well everywhere except the front emblem (debris impact prone). It had a few paint chips, so I took it off after about 6 months and redid it with more coats to hopefully prevent chips. |
