Noise in the Rear with ST Coilovers - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Ever since I've installed a set of used ST coilovers, there has been a very pronounced clunking and thumping noise coming from the rear. I've went the distance to torque every bolt of the suspension, but to no avail...

The last attempt my friend and I did was to tighten the top nut of the rear coilovers by using a socket to hold the shaft in place while using an allen key to tighten. However, no matter how much we tighten, it would not fully tighten. It would get tighter at certain degrees, but then it gets light again.

I was wondering if anyone else has this issue. I had Stance Coilovers in the past and they would only clunk below 15 mph. The current noise produced by my set of ST is definitely worst.

I had a similar issue. However, I just needed to zip the nuts on with an impact gun. Take the nut completely off, lightly hand thread it a turn (So the gun can get some momentum), and zip it on.

Torque the lower steut bolt to 90 ft lbs. That's where my noise keeps coming from. I just keep re tightening.

Should probably buy new oem bolts at some point.

That sure sounds like a stripped bolt/nut. I hope not for your sake but...

Definitely sounds like a stripped bolt/nut. Probably why you hear the clunking because it's unable to be tightened down to spec.

Yea didn't notice that sentence, take the coilover off and take that nut off and see what's going on

Top nut is most likely your issue, especially if it wasn't tightened correctly (as in using a key to keep the shock from spinning while tightening the top bolt). I had all kinds of noises for a week until I took the time to correctly torque the top bolt.

With my RS*Rs I did not have the option of using a hex key to keep the shaft from spinning... I cut a m14 1.5mm nut in half and used that with a small piece of aluminum to hold the shaft. I used the nut to protect the threads and the aluminum to protect from marring the flat side of the shaft. Worked very well!

Use a pass thru wrench and use a 10mm socket to put on top and it'll hold it in place.
