Traditionally they are pretty basic mechanical tracing systems. But that's not going to be the case anymore.

Now if they had a 4 or 5 axis grinder they could do it without too much difficulty. But I'm not familiar with the fancy (more than 3 axis) CNC stuff. Or CNC grinding of any kind.

Issue with cams is they need to be hardened. So they would probably rough 4 axis mill them out, heat treat them, then finish 4 or 5 axis grind them. I could see it getting expensive.

Apparently Bosch used a single fancy 3d cam as a fuel 'map' on one of their early mechanical fuel injection systems.

Landis is the name of a company that does cam grinding machines, I believe.
Darn, that sounds complicated. I'm wondering if we'll ever be able to buy a high revving, continuously variable duration throttleless engine, which would need a solid cam rather than variable lifters to be effective. There's more issues than just the cams of course, you can't get rid of the throttle because you need backup output control (actually you can if you allow a lean burn limp home mode, which the EPA would probably freak out over ), and you need an active PCV system and brake booster, and if cam wear is an issue, you need to have an ECU that can remember how the duration on the cams are affected by wear or else you'd have extremely lethargic throttle response as the engine slowly increases the airflow and lets it register via MAF. 3rd party tuning would be a nightmare lol, but the OEM should be able to dial in the ideal amount of overlap and duration for every engine load level.

If BMW replaces ITBs with this on their M cars, I just might have to buy one someday, somehow, electrical problems be damned. The nerdgasm would be too great to contain. They're the only company with the balls to put out cutting edge engine features like this, unless Honda wants to step it up by reviving their canceled AVTEC (which is supposed to be better than Valvematic, the simplest execution of continuously variable duration+lift).

After about 2 months of sitting in the closet, assumed broken, I pulled out my old PC, took everything apart, put it back together, and now it's alive and kicking. wtf. I never took anything apart before it broke, at least not that I know of. Maybe something rattled loose? idk. Stupid computers...

Hey, quick question to my fellow FT86 members and BRZers.

What would you choose? Premium BRZ w/spoiler at sticker price or Limted BRZ at dealer invoice or possible even slightly lower price from that as well... hmm? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

My father always taught me that if you're gonna drop that kinda dough on something it better have a massive return. I'm good in the hot chicks department and dudes/popos I'll just leave it there. Can't wait to read your writings on the event.
