Unfortunately, this can't be done with hopes and dreams. It will take policy to make that happen. Since the current policy is to do boosters in the West and stay the course in the rest of the world, the smart play appears to be to get the booster.

I'm really conflicted on the whole booster thing. I said back in the spring that I was expecting this all to come back by next fall.
The fact that all of it is already happening in august now makes me believe that there's really no way out-- we're not in the typical cold season that encourages virus spreading yet, so when we are later, it will only be worse. We will be our own downfall.

The best hope I can see is we're going to have variants popping up for quite a while. The booster vaccines will be tailored to the new variants and we'll be dancing to that tune. Lather, rinse, repeat. Eventually, if we're more lucky than smart, our immune systems will adapt to the class/family of bug and it will recede into the background. Before and unless that happens, we're collectively too stupid and/or selfish to beat this thing back.

Uneducated statement here: but our immune system hasn't adapted to the 'flu family of viruses. If one wants a 'flu vaccination one has to get a new best guess vaccination each year.

Somewhere along the line, we decided to value all of human life over gene pool strength, and this is the result-- where we're given dosages of dead viruses to alter the natural course of life in our favor. People with strong immune systems of any age don't need vaccines as often, if at all.

Vaccines reduce the severity. They keep hospitals from filling up. And if we're lucky they may reduce transmission enough (especially when paired with other measures the same people refusing vaccines also refuse) to kick this thing. Probably not - that was never likely with as many people in the world and the time it takes to vaccinate. While we're filling hospitals and morgues past capacity (that's mostly unvaccinated, it'll eventually have to run out of those) and the world stutters along and is a major inconvenience... Yes, that's still the anti-vaccers to blame. The policy-makers refusing to take care of their flock just to stubbornly stand on some principle.

It's funny. After the anti-vaxers throw the rest of the country under the bus, they pull out this post/pre hoc rationalizing. "Oh well, that I pissed away a chance to contribute to protecting my fellow Americans doesn't matter because the vaccines don't protect as well against variants."
Not mentioning, of course, that it is the vast pool of unvaxxed that enabled Delta to rampage across the country. Trust me, people will remember. My wife told me about an article by a California physician who is now treating a massive influx of unvaxxed COVID patients. She wrote of one who had used the tired trope that he was waiting for full FDA approval before getting the shot. Said he didn't want to be a guinea pig in some government experiment. Well, he waited too long. First he asked to get the vaccine. "Won't work after you catch the disease," he was told. Then as his condition deteriorated, the doctor informed him that there was one last thing to try, but it was truly experimental and unproven. He said, "anything to save my life!" It didn't work, and he died. A free vaccine two months earlier would have done exactly that. The doctor observed that after fighting the virus for over a year and watchin hundreds of people die because there was simply no way to protect or treat them, she has a very difficult time feeling sorry for patients like this one. There was a way to avoid dying, probably even to avoid getting sick. It was free. It was easy. Yet, some people, refuse for whatever reason to take advantage of it. Her story is a common one across the nation. If you as an unvaxxed patient wind up in that bed, your doctor, whoever they are, will almost certainly do whatever they can to save your life. There's one thing they may not do, shed a tear if you die.
