Tyre Scraping Skills

Hi all, I'm sure many of you have experienced the results of hot, soft tyres after a run, dirt paddock and dirt pits.

Has anyone ever scraped their own tyres to get rid of that layer of molten rubber mixed with dust. (No, a burnout or hot lap won't get rid of it, that's why pros have tyre scrapers.)

.I've seen guys using a blow torch and a paint scraper. Anyone...?

I do.

Get the right tools, or a very, very sharp scraper.

Sitting in the sun alone will be enough to soften for scraping.

The EASY button is a battery powered oscillating multi tool with a scraper blade.

Do you use it in conjunction with a heat gun?

No need - it takes everything off cold or hot. Lightyears faster/easier than doing it with a hand scraper.

To be honest I stopped scraping long ago and just scrub the tires. The only thing you HAVE to pay attention to is technique because if you don't pay attention you go into the rubber of the tire - but outside of using it "wrong", it's super to have if you're going to be doing this often (like every weekend).

+1 on a multitool and blade. I got one with a Ryobi set some years ago for a good price, if you have any need for 18V or so tools most lines have one of the oscillating tools. A 2" or so blade works pretty well.

If you are autocrossing then maybe this useful, otherwise the excess pick up will burn off quite quickly on an out lap. For track days or WtW I would not waste my time scraping a tire.

Hillclimbs. It's more to get rid of a season's worth of dirt paddock crud than to do between runs.

I agree that it would be useful in a hill climb.

One trip to nats was enough to convince me to always carry an oscillating tool to national events.
