It IS outdated, as a matter of fact, they are no longer being produced. However, they are still available on the market and going up in price because people know they are great head units.

If you find one, grab it now while you still can. Worry about the Bluetooth connectivity at a later time. You can always add it to the auxillary inputs if you're not satisfied with the performance of the built-in connectivity and controls.

Yes, my Pioneer Premier head unit is even older than the one you're interested in.

the simple answer is yes it's old, no, and yes.

pioneer seems to have all but given up offering updates on it, despite it having an option for updating the firmware via usb. so it's essentially stuck with early 2000 version firmware. they seem to have moved on to the NEX series, but that entire series all has variations of color touch screens that i despise.

i used to have a variation of the 3500nex with the flip-out screen. it did the song title integration better than the 80prs--as in, it displayed song info that the 80prs doesn't. the buttons on the nex also actually forwarded/reversed songs. with the 80prs, i have to manually do it on the phone-- the 80prs is literally just a raw bluetooth connection in some ways. but because the big obnoxious screen bothered me, a lot of times, i never even opened it up and just let it do it's thing without the screen--after the initial audio setup, the main function i used was the volume knob. it was only $350, but it remains the only radio i've ever had stolen as well, because it looked like a high end flip out nav deck. the 80prs is similar in cost, and identical in performance, but i've never had theft issues because it looks cheap.

i routinely run tunein or just play songs off my phones storage on my 80prs without issue. there shouldn't be any issue playing spotify on it.

I have had my Atoto A6 for a few years and love it. I run the Torque app, CarPlay and sometimes my kids watch movies from a USB thumb drive on the road.

I am excited to try out the new S8 when they release the Toyota size unit.

Thank you so much for the info! Updated reviews on these are getting pretty rare in 2021 lol.

Yeah I’d love to be able to avoid those big touchscreens if I can. There’s not a whole lot of single DIN units to choose from, and on top of great sound, the 80prs is one of the bette looking units! Do the buttons on the 80prs work if you plug in your iPhone to the USB port instead of connecting via Bluetooth? And does it override the volume control on the phone, or do you still need to tweak across both devices?

I've got an android, never tried plugging it in via usb. Somewhere after OS version 4, every new phone I've used (essential, google pixel) has refused to autoplay music, so I use 'autoplay' to launch my media app, and it also resets the audio level to a preset level as well.

In a way, I like the radio the way it works as a 'raw/dumb' bluetooth connection because there's less to blame on the radio, and functions are easier to program in the phone anyways.

Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah might not be a huge issue. At the moment it autoplays on the stock unit, but usually I go into the phone to make sure it’s playing from Spotify then I’m good to go. The simplicity is also one of the reasons why I like the dumb USB connection, just can get a little annoying sometimes being constantly tied to a cable haha.
