I got a quote from a (non-dealer) subaru shop for $1100 for a TOB + clutch replacement. And here I thought things were supposed to be more expensive in California vs here lol

Yeah I got a similar quote from a Subaru shop before I took it to my main guy who is a 86/BRZ specialist. It is because they are not as familiar with the work so it takes them hours of labor.

Make sure they break down the costs in the quote so you can call them out on what they are ripping you off for.

They should list:
New tob part price ( make sure it is the updated version)
New clutch kit part price
Flywheel resurface (if needed) price
Labor per hour and how many hours.

Because it is the same labor to get the trans out for the tob they shouldn't charge you much more for installing the new clutch labor.

If they charge alot per hour it is expected they would be efficient and professional enough for the whole job to be 3 hours max. Use that video as reference, the trans comes out pretty easy for a pro.

Shit is way expensive here in the Bay area but I really searched for the right shop with skills and credentials and fourm users reviews.

Hope you get it done for a good price and do not put off getting the tob replaced as Tcoat will tell you.
