Same here. In fact the first car I ever owned that had tach also had an AT.

Ugm wrong.... I have daily driven manual transmissions for well over 400,000 miles over the years (just adding up manual cars I've owned and their mileage quickly in my head). After about the first 150,000 miles or so driving a MT basically becomes "automatic". Unless I'm racing (which I don't do when I'm using a car as a DD) it never really even occurs to me that I'm shifting gears, any more than it occurs to me that I'm braking or tuning the radio. In the end, on the highway driving in traffic there is almost zero difference to me between the two, particularly in the 86. Now, a race track would be a different story, but we are talking DD not racing.

Uh,I didn't say anything about looking at the tach? In fact, imo,if you have to have the tach tell you when to shift, then you shouldn't even be in a car with a MT.That includes the passanger's seat and the trunk (<---joke)! The actual concentration that I was referring to comes from having all four limbs engaged in driving, and not just two, like a ton of people that drive AT do. Think of driving a stick like leaning how to be a good drummer.Sure, you can use only your hands to work the cymbals, toms, and snare, but until you learn how to use both of your feet for the bass and high hats, you'll never really be great. |

Here's a test.Go to the gym and do an intense leg and calf work out,to the point to where actually walking feels like a chore.Hop into a car with MT and drive home.Next time do the exact same workout with the exact same results of fatigue, then hop into a car with AT and drive home. Post your results of which drive home was more physically challenging. Too many people here seem to be getting butt hurt over something that they shouldn't based on people's opinions.Personally,I hate AT for sports cars, but that doesn't mean that anyone should be mad over my opinion. Obviously the OP has some sort of regret for buying an AT over a MT,otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.Whether it be from the endless professional reviews that pretty much unanimously praise the MT over the AT,or maybe he just misses the feeling from driving a stick,it might be fair to say that the assumption is that he feels like he should've bought a MT. At the end of the day,buy what you like and own that decision, because we live in a hyper critical world, and if you can't take anyone else's opinion without getting defensive and butthurt, then you are doing the internet wrong and should probably find other forums to post on. |

Furthermore,it IS popular opinion (so take that for what it's worth) that learning to drive MT makes for better drivers, just search ANY article on the subject.Admittedly, the empirical data isn't very clear as there are too many variables to determine which has better or worse accident rates. Even with that, your responses tell me that you are going against the opinion that many people are putting in front of you. There's an overwhelming feeling of many drivers that they feel that they are better drivers when in a MT car,yet because of your personal opinion, you want to discount all of theirs. |

Man, this thread is still alive haha
Automatic is great for vans and suvs cvt's are great for gas mileage paddle shifting is great for quick lap times. But for overall best experience behind the wheel, manual will always be the best.
