Finally got one !

Seems like i've been lurking here forever lol. I had test driven 2-3 of them but i had a hard time finding an asphalt with the nice head unit and low miles around here. My local dealer finally got a nice 2014 asphalt gray FRS in stock. Already had TRD intake and catback on it.

Probably going to order toms tails, winjet headlights, toyota badges, clear reflectors, 5000k fog bulbs tonight... then come spring time coilovers and wheels.

This is replacing my 06 hail damaged corolla hand me down from the parents so will be the new DD. Just so nice having an awesome car that you can just let eat up the miles, park anywhere, get dirty, and not care about it. With my GTR i'm always conscious of mileage, parking it in a safe area, etc.. kind of sucks.

anyway just snapped 1 pic at the dealer.. car is getting detailed next week to get all the swirls out and then i'll get a few mods on and have a photoshoot with both cars.

O.K. forget horsepower.

Let us know how it handles compared to the GTR, and other similarities/differences....likes dislikes...as you get to know it well.

yeah still getting to know it.

My GTR is modded, running e85, and has 285/335 mpss tire setup on HREs. So its putting down about 600+whp and torque and has ALOT more rubber and stickier compound. Runs low 10s in the quarter. Also on race springs.

I bought the FRS because its the complete opposite philosophy. 1100 lbs lighter, better seating position, manual transmission. You feel that I can use 90-100% of the performance on the street. The GTR thats damn near impossible. Its almost too much car for the street. Until you are doing double the posted limit it feels pretty mundane, it comes alive when you push it hard. The FRS is fun at all speeds.

As for handling they both feel pretty different. The FRS's main advantage is that low weight, going thru quick change of directions is easier in the twin. I love that feeling in back where you get the sense its about to break loose. The GTR you have to brake hard, settle it into the corner, and then power out at apex. Its an odd feeling if you've ever driven one hard... you can literally feel the computers shifting power around to all the wheels pulling you thru the corner. It will countersteer and correct your mistakes before you can even react... i wont lie though.. its saved my ass at least 2-3 times. I will say the steering feel is very good when you drive it hard. Not as good as the FRS but its close.

How is the FRS better than a GTR? --
- RWD so you can kick out the back end
- manual tranny
- much better seating position. i love the low slung cockpit. GTR sits very high like an m3.
- i think it looks better to be honest. very sexy curvy lines. the gtr is hard edged and masculine.
- 40mpg. I get 10 in the GTR with e85.
- you can beat on it around town without worrying about going to jail.

The GTR has its own merits too. The forces exerted on your body by it is pretty epic. acceleration, braking, cornering puts forces on your body you aren't going to feel unless you buy a 200k exotic or go on a roller coaster. The GTR follows the 'more is more' way of thinking, while the FRS says 'less is more'.

thats awesome. your excitement seems like you're buying your very first car. But coming from a GTR owner thats very surprising. I figured if I ever got to own a GTR, everything would feel under powered.

Welcome to the club!

A New car is always exciting to me. Like I said the two cars fill in each other's flaws. Of course the frs isn't fast but I didn't buy it to compete with other cars. Just a fun dd. But after a modded gtr nothing feels fast. 370s mustangs camaros vettes all feel slow now. Drove a new viper and while most people would be giggling I was just like oh ok cool.

Interesting:
Enlightened forum member with a high end car can appreciate the twins' merits and understands the principles to which this car was made.

Common forum troll can't afford much more than upper $20k then incessantly complains about HP and unable street race in a straight line with the other idiots.

OP: Just wondering, if you were to trade in your GTR what would you go for (in your situation what would be a worthy replacement)? New Stingray? Shelby GT350R? 2016 GTR, Porsche 911 Carrera S?

well my situation is different as ive gotten a pretty big salary bump since buying the gtr 3 years ago. Here are some of the cars i've been looking at:

2015 viper -- loved it. dodge stepped up there game on this one. going to be one the last great manual supercars. problem is there values have tanked. The car is tested was 140k new 2 years ago... i offered them 90k in march and they didn't take it. sold for 80k last week lol.

New Z06 -- looks great but seem to be having overheating issues at the track. historically vettes depreciate hard too.. just look how cheap c6 zr1's have gotten now.

Audi R8 v10 - ehh not a fan of the looks... reminds me too much of a TT

Mclaren mp4 - depreciated hard and now are a good value at around 130-140k. but again its design is just kind of bleh, nothing exciting going aside from the doors. the new 650S makes it looks super dated. Also i have no idea how i would get one serviced as the closest mclaren place is 300 miles away.

991 GT3 - looks amazing. great performance. 9k redline. every reviewer has been gushing about this car. Seems to be the hot ticket in the 150k sports car market. I've also never had mid or rear engined car before so i'd really like to try it out and see what its like. I honestly think this is going to replace my GTR in a year or so. Only problem is that they are super rare, so they go for over way over MSRP on the used market and finding one to your specs is impossible. For that money i'd rather just wait until the 991.2 is announced and spec it out to my liking. although that might not happen either as people are already placing deposits to get on the list for it when it hasn't even been announced yet!

Lol I care about my FRS more than my BMW. This thing is my baby, I don't evendriver it in the rain haha.
But it is nice having a car with a less probability of scratching it due to jealousy like with a gtr and Ferrari etch... because there are jerks.

Anyways welcome to the forum! Nice rides

OP:

Congrats on your new FRS.. Hands down ... The GTR is the king of the track and straight line speed. As you said ... Both of your cars compliment each other. One car missing from your dream list would be a Ferrari 458.

Have driven a 2013 GT-R hard for a few days and 500 miles of CA back-roads I can appreciate both platforms. Congrats on the purchase and I bet you can't keep it stock long (nor wait til spring!). I'm down to the last few months of FR-S ownership before I strip the upgrades and start to search for a new toy. Undoubtedly spoiled with the FRS car/platform, but in need of new experiences (after 50K miles).

Congrats!

BTW the bolded part below is how I thought I'd feel when I bought mine, but it hasn't worked out for me haha. I don't know if it's because the car is new, good looking, or maybe I've bonded with it emotionally, but I still find myself treating it pretty much like I did my more expensive cars.
