CV joint problem?

Hi guys,

Quick question. My FR-S makes a clicking sound (exactly like hot metal cooling down after you shut off the car) . This sound only happens when I turn or change lanes. It also only happens once per turn/lane change. Is this a bad CV joint?

Could be a loose axle nut, you can take it to the dealer and have it greased and re-torqued, those with the click have reported that this can solve the click.

Edit: Should be a simple warranty operation, maybe half an hour of time if they're greedy enough to charge.

CV joint issues do exist on occasion based on the setup of the car and how it has been driven (Lowered, clutch drops with sticky tires, etc.)

Is this an urgent problem? I have "my hands tied behind my back" at the moment and probably won't be able to bring it in for 2-3 weeks.

Also my car is bone stock and I also purchased Toyota Extra Care Platinum so I won't have to worry about them charging me

I doubt you will have a problem, broken axles have only happened on cars with aftermarket suspension.

Re-reading your OP it sounds a bit weirder than I thought, it may be something bigger but I think you should be ok if you take it easy. Hell it could be the rear deck lid popping, completely unrelated to suspension/drivetrain.

Those extra care packages may not cover everything, despite what the salesman tells you at the time. I'm not too interested in the details but I would read the package thoroughly before being sure.

Weird. I'm getting the same sound when my car is on regardless of it moving.

I think it was only a temporary problem. On my way to school today, there was absolutely no sound. If it is the CV joints, then it is thankfully covered under the platinum care so at least I have that peace of mind. Thanks for all the help though!

That sure is strange. I wonder what it is. To my knowledge, CV joints only make sound when in motion and when you're turning. But hey, I'm no expert. I could be wrong. Might wanna get that checked out. Good luck to you!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it isn't the joint, but it's just odd to me that my car is making that ticking noise while the car is on and it's getting more frequent.

CV joints can make a clicking noise while turning and while driving straight.

If it's happening when you're turning, the cv joint is obviously going out, but it can still last a bit before being replaced (although I wouldn't put it off). If it's clicking while driving straight, it's about to go...

Doesn't sound like a cv joint issue though. Stock suspension and ride height with normal everyday driving isn't enough to cause the OEM cv joints to prematurely wear out like that.

Mine is clicking when taking off from a stop, especially while turning

Stock suspension and ride height with normal everyday driving (except for 4-5 autocross events in the past two years)

Did you ever get yours fixed? I'm having a similar problem...
