Another Coilover noise thread..

So i have fortune 500's. Never had a problem, until recently both sides started making noise. I checked the preload, tightened the collars, tightened the top hat bolts, tighted the top strut nut. All other bolts *sway bar/shock bolt ext are tight. I'm literally clueless as to what the noise could be. It will randomly make a clunking sound. It'll happen on bumps/flat roads/inclines ext. Its just totally random when it happens. And its just the rears. Fronts i've had no problems with it.

Its so frustrating. I've tried raising it up more, preloading alittle more, retightening all the collars/tightening all the bolts/ redoing the top hat nuts/ and the strut nut. Im clueless to what it could be.

Usually I hear a clunk after hitting a bump and the rear comes back down. But today I heard it again when taking a sharp right turn semi-quickly. I'll check the stock rear sway as well at the same time.

I've had the 500s for about 7 months now. I had some clunking... tightened the bolts and everything on them. still had it. Turned the damping up from full soft and haven't heard it since. I also autocross on them. Going over large bumps, they are noisy, but that's just metal on metal since they don't use the rubber top mounts.

Only issue I had was with the radial bearings drying out, but that was expedited due to DDing through the winter (salt).

I was planning on turning them a little stiffer from full soft anyways so hopefully that helps

I had a loose strut nut that caused clunking over bumps with mine.

I also had coil bind at low speed turns. I sprayed some lube in the spherical bearings in the top hats of the front coilovers and it went away in a few days.

Essentially, the coil spring can't rotate freely on the strut perches when the wheel is turned and the coilover pivots.

That resistance between the spring and what it rests on.

Fortune Auto sells roller bearings to alleviate this issue as well for $50 I believe. They have a good explanation on their website. The roller bearings allow the top hat to move independently of the rest of the coilover when turning.

well that'd explain that noise.. But the clunking and stuff im kind of baffled. Fortune wants me to send them in and be "looked at". But i hafta pay shipping and be without my car for god knows how long. And they may determine nothings wrong with them. And i'll hafta pay to have shipping back.
