Perrin Rear Shifter Bushing Install - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

This DIY guide can be used for other vendor's bushings. I decided to purchase the Perrin based on my good relationship with @PERRIN_Chris.

@cobrabyte, @post_break and myself had a good time replacing bushings around our gearboxes. Much appreciation for the lift and garage space! Good times learning about our cars. @cobrabyte was also a good hand model LOL

Before we start, lets do some feedback. Out of all the mods I've done, arguably the best mods you can do are
+ Gearbox fluid change ($60 - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19218)
+ Rear shifter bushing ($40)
+ Transmission bushing ($40 - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19782)

It's very inexpensive, and goes a long way to remove the notchiness in the gearbox. For me fluid alone wasn't enough to remove notchiness, cold and warm. Shifting also felt very sloppy. Downshifting 3-2 was impossible without feeling that ball breaking cringe that makes you cry alone in the corner.

Now these things are possible. Throws are precise and the gear lever just goes where you want it to go. Notchiness/crunch noises are pretty much gone.

Not hard to install if you have a lift. Could be a challenge on jack stands. This $130 goes a long way to improve your confidence and precision in shifting. Talking about night and day difference.
@PERRIN_Chris: My only negative feedback was that washers were not included in my package. Not using them, the polyurethane started to eat your bolt head! Luckily we undid the bolt and found washers lying around in the garage. @post_break also did not have washers in his package, he used a few leftovers from my headerback install.

I do not have any knowledge about if this helps automatic transmissions. I am not responsible for any damage as a result of this modification. Remember to be safe!

Installation Steps

I have the Perrin bushing and personally I think the inner diameter of the whole is too big which could result in actually a sloppier shift. I won't install mine.

what are you basing this on if you havent installed it? mine went on snug, and improved feel.

what do you believe the ID should be?

One side of the ID hole of the bushing that you slide on is bigger than the other end.

This is the same install for the WRX and STI and it does clean up the sloppy feel.

Great review! The kits are supposed to come with 2 washers, sorry about that! I'm having all of those kits checked to make sure they're in there.

So let get this straight... you bought it, received it, then took it out of the package only to say "yea that hole is too big" and set it aside only to come tell us about this miraculous discovery you've made?

I installed this like 30 mins ago and I don't like it at all.

The shifter now makes excessive noise - whenever I put it in gear there is now a winding noise. Also, at low rpms you can hear this winding noise. In cabin noise is obnoxiously loud.

When I downshift the winding noise increases significantly and has an extremely large amount of resistance compared to stock; as if I am forcing the gear in. At one point I was worried that I was damaging the gears, so I left it in neutral and braked.

Maybe I'm the only one with this issue, but I'm going to get it removed.

Also, Yes I have it in the correct orientation.

I definetely love my Perrin rear shifter bushing and there is no extra NVH noticed in a month time... Just pure shifting pleasure

Did you support the gearbox with a jack/lift during install?
Are you sure the driveshaft/propshaft was bolted back in correctly?

This sounds nothing like a bushing issue - I'd get a professional to check it ASAp
