Just guessing that cable might be related to aux functions which don't exist in the 2020?

Correct, Carplay for iPhone requires USB connection on this HU. Bluetooth will get you access to your music library, but not Carplay unlike some other full feature units.

- I took my 86 in to the dealership to have a look at this audio anomaly.
- It seems that those yellow wires and plug is an included accessory to bypass the amp. They just plugged it in.

- Hopefully the photos show as follows;
+ Bypass wire assembly
+ Head unit/speakers plugged into the amp
+ Head unit/speakers plugged into the bypass
+ Rich audio goodness with deep bass via Dire Straits

- So in summary - Just bypass the amp

Looks like the “Mystery of the Silent Door Speakers” has been solved. And I highly suspect this is a dealer-caused problem and not a factory-caused problem for the simple fact that the installation instructions for the Harmon head unit are in english and not Japanese.

My 2017 BRZ was in the same situation. Factory HU and no sound at all from the door speakers.

Bypassing the amp was worth trying but a quick search for Toyota amp plug part number PT296-18191 shows it selling for an insane $75-$95!

I ordered a Metra 70-1761 harness plug from Amazon for only $5. All you need to do is connect the harness wires then plug it in and enjoy surprisingly decent sound.

Thanks to all the contributors for providing the information, pinouts and pictures to make this a quick, easy, good enough solution.

Mighty good information provided by all here.

I was confident before a picture of the back of the head unit connectors was shown, but now its confirmed that this is basically (mostly) plug and play for not just older FR-S/86s, but any one who retrofitted older OEM units.

The 28pin connector is the microphone + steering wheel controls, the 24 pin connector was originally for rear camera. I wonder if it still works on older models with the proper harness adjustments?

I was starved for a proper OEM android solution and now I got it. Will update if and when I install

Yeah. FLAC is the best. It's what I use for audio at home LMS (https://forums.slimdevices.com/forum...h-Media-Server).

I don't mind mp3 for the car.
Android Auto's requirement for playback via Bluetooth is just plain crazy.
I'll will probably just go back to just Bluetooth.

I really wish the OEM unit had RCA input.

Still looking for the specifications of the unit.

Guess who got speakers in his 2020 86 on day 18? LOL

I think the best part is the connector for the speakers was zip tied to the harness. What a weird oversight by Toyobaru.

Thanks to you guys for making me look back there. I had been screwing with the EQ thinking something was horribly wrong with the system.

If someone doesn't have the connector and needs the metra connector listed above, let me know. I may have ordered it already and it might have already been on its way before I looked in my trunk so I have a free one.

Trying (in vain it seems) to get more details/specifications on the 2020 86 OEM head unit.

PN: pt296-18190-20

Looking for specs like peak output, touchscreen type, display contrast ratio, etc.

I reached out HarmanKardon support (harmankardon.com) and after a lengthy chat session I got nowhere. I related to them that it's incomprehensible that they don't have the information of a product they manufacture. I'm sure they do but are unwilling to provide them.

Anyway, they (HarmanKardon) said that the details would have to be supplied by Toyota.

The manual for the unit (linked in the fist post) does not contain specs.

I hope to get out this weekend to run some 'critical errands' and get some more 'Android Auto' testing in.
