Intake and Exhaust Upgrades

I recently purchased a used Toyota 86. The car already seems to have some nice upgrades. The exhaust has the Invidia blue tips. I am not sure whether these are tips only or the whole exhaust has been upgraded, sure it does make nice sound.

First issue I want to identify as to what exhaust I have. My initial thoughts are that it is a Q300.

Secondly how can I improve this mod? Can I add more grunt to the engine and growl to the sound?

What does an Air Intake do? Will it complement or improve the exhaust mode I already have on my car?

Throw a header on with OFT or ecutek and get a drop in filter. Will definitely wake up the car and give it a nicer growl.

I am a total novice when it comes to cars, what are those?

Header is one of these?

I would stay away from most cheap e-bay headers, thay can have fitment issues, crack ect even if they are a good copy of a known good header

Tomei/Gruppe-s are good reasonable priced headers.

if you in sydney and you like the UEL rumble sound then look at the PSR Pro speed Racing header and overpipe combo

http://www.prospeedracing.com.au/pro...scion-frs.html

dont bother with an intake just get a drop in filter for $50 you will get almost the same gain.

Tune will be biggest issue. Try and find a local reputable tuner

Ecutek tuners in australia charge ridiculous prices like $1500 for an tune (no cable included). Ecutek tuning is much more reasonably priced in USA

See if you can find someone who uses BRZ edit or Tactrix or use OFT. http://www.openflashtablet.com/Autom...FRS/index.html you get vdevice and tunes included.

If you go the OFT way @Wayno has some good tunes developed for aussie fuels.

You'll know if you have an invidia n1, as it is very loud. Q300 on the other hand is much tamer.

Skip an air intake and get a dry panel filter for value and reliability.

PSR Pro, do they actually carry out the fitting or parts only? If no, who do you recommend in Sydney? What do you recommend for a drop in filter.

I will need to do a bit of reading on An Tune.

It is definitely not n1, I will take some pictures and upload when the weather clears out a bit.

Well then, I suggest you just leave the exhaust alone ......

There is nothing wrong with the OEM air intake ...... I'd suggest you just leave that alone also.

Almost everyone has suggested to leave the air intake alone, so I am going to leave it alone.

I thought there might be some room for improvement as far the exhaust is concerned.

steve99 mentioned some options above so I am looking at those.

Yep, there are options for the exhaust.

Ask yourself, what do you want the exhaust to do (except carry combustion gasses to the rear of the car) .. ??

Better sound .....?? You seem to be happy with the present sound.....

Allow the engine to make a bit more power .. ?? A aftermarket header will do that. However, it will change the exhaust note (make it louder).

Also, a header swap will require a "tune" to allow the power increase.

Now, with a header change, you will have possibility of needing to change other exhaust parts (if its too loud). In addition to the cost of the header, a "tune" will cost some money.

Nope, ol humfrz ain't much fun ..... but, since you say you're a "total novice when it comes to cars", you might be better off, just leaving that engine alone.....

Just noticed you were in sydney and not usa :-)

A few people run those headers in OZ no issues, they would probably be able to fitt them but so should most exhaust shops, or they are ptetty easy to do yourself.

If your catback is an N1 then adding a catless header is going to make it extremly loud. If its aQ300 it will be ok

N1 is canister type

https://www.google.com.au/imgres?img...DpcQMwgfKAIwAg

Q300 is normal muffler type

http://www.redline360.com/image/cach...3S-500x500.jpg

if you have the N1 sell it to someone and get their stock catback as part payment it you want to add catless header, thier is almost no power gain in catbacks just sound

You can run catless header without tune but you will get cel light code P0420_ You could try an 02 spacer but a tune is a better option and will add some more hp as well.

you might be able to pick up a secondhand oft try the facebook buy\sell\swap pages new ones are arrounf 700 aud with freight.
