Going to have my car on the lift tonight. Think I'll try removing the lower outrigger bushings first to see if that gets rid of the 1st & 2nd gear clunk.

When is the clunk happening exactly, particularly in 1st? As you shift into 1st with car stopped and clutch in, or while off/on the gas while moving?

It happens when you let off the clutch pedal and engage 1st and 2nd gear. It's a common issue with these bushings as it transfers the noise of the differential through the subframe. The sound is actually normal, you just can't hear it with the stock bushings. What I'm trying to figure out is whether it's just the outrigger inserts, the cradle inserts, or both.

Interesting. I'm not sure I've noticed it on mine. I've got STI engine/trans mounts, WL subframe, and diff inserts. I did remove the lower outrigger bushings to eliminate some whining and was happy with that change.

Since you removed the lower bushings, that's probably why you're not noticing any clunks. I'm going to try that first tonight and then do a test drive.

I removed the top and bottom outrigger bushings and the clunks are gone now. Hard to believe a few small pieces of poly can make such a difference in sound. I left the rear cradle bushings in place.

I like the clunk, but it's good to know how to get rid of it.

Do you think just removing the bottom outrigger bushing would make a major difference as stated earlier?

Thanks for doing the testing either way.

Really not sure if leaving the top bushing would still transfer the clunking sound or not. Since it's connected directly to the frame, I would think it's possible though. I went ahead and removed both just to be safe.

necro post. Dont yell at me. Just wanted to clarify some stuff and a small review.

TLDR;
with all diff bushings alot of added NVH more than i thought there would be. Started to feel like track car or a honda car :P but the car feels planted and that tiny delay in throttle response was mostly gone.
without the front bottom inserts most of the NVH was gone or isnt as bad. The delay in throttle response is somewhat back (jerks a little)but not as bad with only stock bushings.

I recently added the Whiteline subframe inserts and diff inserts. i drove the car with all the diff inserts in(subframe inserts too). Dang, talk about being loud. you hear the whirring noise at low RPM, which to me wasnt ever a big deal. Big o' clunk when youre changing gears but around 75-77mph it made this awful whirring noise and i could replicate it about 90% of the time during those speeds by accelerating or letting off the throttle completely.
About deceleration, there is ALOT of NVH when you decel. my exhaust is the quad tip Trd exhaust and before without the inserts it was rather tame and no annoying drone. Now the drone is there and its loud like im going past 3k rpm.

I never understood what everyone meant by the car was more planted and whatnot. Now i do. The only major annoyance i have with the stock car is theres a small delay in throttle response, especially in the first few gears, when you press down on the throttle. its very small delay like, half a second maybe even less. But it is really annoying when youre putting small throttle inputs to go up a ramp to jack up your car or whatever. the delay felt like the clutch wasnt fully engaged to me. with these bushings that delay was extremely minimized or gone.

However, when i took off the front bottom inserts and left the front top inserts. Most of the general NVH was gone, there is added NVH but not to the level that it was before. Decelerating isnt terrible as before. pretty much all thats in bold was reduced or gone. throttle response suffered a tiny bit but its alot better than just stock bushings only.
