Shifting Problem (Automatic)

As some of you guys know, my car was rear ended 2 months ago..

Today the car has been finished being repaired, however, there is still one problem they can't fix.

The car won't shift in to reverse neutral or drive, but it will mechanically if we over ride it. Once over rided in drive, it only shifts to neutral, drive, and M. The car drives fine.

tl;dr, car won't shift

Anyone know what could be the problem?

i would have them change the transmission and not spend another minute diagnosing something that somebody else caused.

The shop repairing your car probably did not reconnect the sensor that detects that the brake pedal has been pressed in.

What they told me is..
Cars goes in to reverse with a over ride just fine. When it's in reverse, the car has no problem backing up.
When car goes in to Drive or M with over ride, the car goes forward fine.. But once you put it in gear, it's stuck there until you have to manually over ride it again.
They told me they're suspecting something electronic..

I noticed that right after I got rear ended, it won't shift, but still drives.

Any clue whats happening?

man...what second rate shop did you take this to?

I'd take the car to toyota about the transmission problem. ESPECIALLY if it did it right after the accident.

Also, how are they manually overriding the shifting? I don't have an auto, so I don't know what to do there.

Also, tell the body shop that did the work about the lights. They most likely forgot to plug up the headlights when putting the front back on.

And this is EXACTLY why I will not go to a dealership's body shop.

I'm guessing that the "override" that the OP is talking about is a little button on the gear indicator next to the shifter that unlocks the solenoid that keeps the shifter in place until you step on the brake, which is what is supposed to release it.

It's underneath the tab above the "P." You have to pop the tab off first.

Not that it sounds like you are going to accept this workaround, but just don't

Tell them if they can't fix the current transmission then you would expect a new one that functions properly.

Not my choice to total it or not.

They pinpoint it on "electrical issue"

something they're responsible for fixing. I wouldn't take possession of the car until they fix everything

Electrical issue or not, the car is not safe to be on the road PERIOD. Any half decent shop wouldn't come close to letting you take that car off their property.
