i get the low speed safety aspect, but it seems it's a minority event if a motorcycle is on the receiving end... but i also refuse to ride motorcycles because of too many stories of other drivers absentmindedly driving through riders...

His gear included full face helmet, riding pants, jacket, gloves and boots. No skin injuries either. Motorcycle helmets do not constrict your vision at all and are actually pretty nicely vented, no reason not to wear one other than being an idiot. The greater the coverage the more protected you are of course. Little hard hat caps aren't going to protect you against the most common injuries to the front and side. My other friend watched a guy crack his head open on a curb in a parking lot. Then proceeded to call 911 when he didn't get up. No helmet. |

Yeap, helmets save lives, we have always needed to wear helmets here in AU, well ever since I got my license in 1980 anyway.
I feel it's the rebel without a clue bunch that advocate not wearing a helmet, because they are to cool, or it will mess up their perm... I've "used" my helmet in a few offs over the years, if I wasn't wearing I would be either dumber than what I currently am....yes it is possible, or dead. I am also a advocate for full face helmets, I worked in a few hospitals years ago, and seen what gutters, gravel and other hard grindy objects do the soft flesh and bones of the face. I'm not a saint though, I do occasionally only wear a t shirt and jeans to cover my body, I do always wear gloves, boots, or purpose built riding shoes. My latest set of casual riding shoes are Dainese Street Biker.

As far as traffic, the issue is primarily in areas of heavy, fast traffic such as suburbia. Downtown traffic is usually not an issue because everyone is moving moderately slow. Divided highway traffic you are mostly all going the same way. Rural traffic about the same. You just have to remember that no matter how loud your bike is or how brightly you are dressed (neither make a real difference) you are riding around with an invisibility cloak on and have to assume no one else sees you or cares about you. You know, pretty much just like driving a car these days.

Welp, ma-ma and pa-pa's summer camp was open again today. Social distancing and hand washing was enforced but mask wearing was not required.
The 4-ager spent most of the day in the pool, the young teenager spent most of the day gazing into an i-pad and the pre-teen ager spent most of the day sleeping - Ma-ma supervised the deck party and pa-pa ventured out to buy some pool chemicals - then, after I returned, I discovered where I stored them from last year - (I'm gonna hafta start making maps of where stuff is). |
