Curious about Ohlins Road and Track

In 2013, they were launched at 3,700 (which is about 4,714.13 today). They were pretty expensive.

In 2018, ohlins updated them for 2nd gen at price point of 3200 (3,780 with inflation factored in).

I saw those on Tire rack without mounts for 2290.

Ohlins said they are coming with 2nd gen specific ones.

I am curious about few things

1. How and why did the price changed so much through years? If you knew price point in between year, please do share those.
2. Since weight and weight distribution is pretty similar between gen 1 and gen 2, what else affects performance that they change it for 2nd gen. I understand changes needed for 2nd engine specific parts, I am just trying to understand suspension.

I own BRZ which would be my daily for I don't know how long. I have Kia Stinger as well and soon getting a Honda pilot as 3rd car with baby on the way. BRZ is pretty easy to drive through city and park at work. At this point I am just learning about my needs and wants to be frank, so all opinions, thoughts, experiences welcomed.

For 1, I was asking because I don't know price from 2020 to determine if price dropped due to 2nd gen or it was dropping already?

List price is often higher then actual sale price for many coilovers, Bilstein does this as well with B16 listed at like $2,500 but usually selling closer to $2,200 these days.

Big Ohlins discount came from removing top hats, ~$2,200 for springs and dampers has been consistent for the last 6-7 years iirc.

Thanks, that's really helpful. Just looked up price of those top hats, damn, those are expensive as well.

No, Ohlins price was very inconsistent the first few years.

I bought mine at the original MSRP. Dealer cost is approx. 15% off MSRP.
A year later the price was reduced by $400 with same specs

Then later they came out with the version without top hats and softer springs for cheaper

Quality product, inconsistent retail structure.

Thanks, tire rack must be loosing money when giving me 21% cash back on current ones though capital one shopping (on everything).

Top hats were useful for camber adjustments right? Those are close to 1k now.

impossible to know without knowing what Ohlins' selling structure is.

inventory writedowns and sell-thru rebates are a thing in the sales channel.

Skip Ohlins top hats and go Raceseng front and OEM rear. Gets you the adjustment without a big price tag.

Thanks. I am not planning to get these anytime soon, just figuring out how aftermarket market works. I would probably put those on after year or two.

Just look for a good price. I have the 2nd rendition at 5k and 5k. Ride 100% better than the PP dampers but you will find the limit on them on the track if you go to a 200 tread wear tire.

I'm not sure any suspension is going to a "cure" for using 200TW tires. 200TWs are so darn sticky anymore, they're borderline slicks. Any suspension will reach their limits on them. RCE, Ohlins, even MCS are all going to be right up there with the best of them. Can't change physics.

7K plus springs will cure it. But then you need to re-valve the dampers for those springs. Then we are getting int more of a straight track set up. I do still like to drive my car outside of the track. I will sacrifice and bottom out my outside suspension on track.

This is one of my favorite pictures going through rattlesnake.

I am going with 9K and 12K springs on my new setup from Annex Club Sport model. Its setup for full aero and 200TW tires

+1 for this sentiment. I have the 5/5 revised MP20 model and really do wish they were a bit stiffer in the spring department. Perhaps when it's time to send them to Ohlins for a rebuild I'll get them revalved for stiffer springs. The road ride quality is incredible though.
