Subaru BRZ 2013 ABS and traction control lights / C1231
Hey,
First post here, long time lurker. I have been scouting previous threads for 1 month now and I am not able to figure out why I am having ABS and traction control light on, so I thought maybe someone has fought with the same problem. Dealer wont help me since car is in EU and is US spec. So: I bought 2013 BRZ from salvage auctions (IAAI / US) late 2019, front damaged and imported it to EU. Seatbelts and airbags were blown (including steering wheel). Clock spring --> airbag connectors had melted, so I ordered new clock spring. After replacing airbags, seatbelts and resetting SRS module I got error C1231 whitch means steering angle sensor short. I bought new steering angle sensor and same error stays (if I remove it I get different code). I have Techstream and I tried to do the zero point calibration (or something like that), but no help. Code disappears but as soon as I turn steering wheel it comes back. Any help / suggestions are welcome since I have been battling with this for 3 months now |

Where was the car hit? Front drivers side? Is that the only code?

If the steering angel sensor is new the code would indicate a wiring/contact issue.
Check where the harness plugs into the ABS pump (front left/drivers) and make sure it is secure and there are no damaged wires. Check the plug that plugs into the steering angle sensor, be sure when the clock spring wires melted it didn't damage those. On the steering angle sensor check the harness Check the voltage between terminals. Voltage Inspection terminals: D56-4(IG) - chassis ground Inspection conditions: IG ON Standard value: 11 to 14 V Check the resistance between terminals. Inspection terminals: D56-1(ESS) - chassis ground Inspection conditions: Always Standard value: Less than 1 Ω If the values aren't correct, there is a issue in the harness.

4th pin was 12.4v and pin 1 0.65 ohms. Connector on the abs is tight and no visible damage. Nothing had to be changed on drivers corner so I don't think it is at the abs pump.
Sadly i didin't try to drive / turn on the car before I changed the clockspring / airbags so I don't know if the car came with the problem or no. Could it be that I just had broken one and bough another broken one? The one I bought was used. |

Original part (which came with the car) had number 27546CA000, so I bough new with the same parts number. Now when I did more research I found out that this is FRS / GT86 part. When searching for BRZ steering angle sensor I found 27549CA000 / 27549CA001. Does anyone know if the FRS sensor should work fine in the BRZ ?

Update: When I do the VSC reset I can remove the error. After removing the error and going to live data in techstream i can see angle sensor sending data fin from +360 to -360, but when going past 1 turn it gets stuck and wont recover / start sending data again.

Any chance you were able to solve this? I'm struggling with exactly the same problem...

I took the car to Subaru and they triend to pair sensor. They were able to do it but once again after sprinning wheel for 360 degrees sensor gets stuck. I had to buy another original subaru part (i think it was 400$ from US). After installing it it paired fine and code has never appered since. I bought FRS /GT86 part (used from ebay) but that was just waste of 200$... FRS / GT86 part might work for you but for me it didint work.

Thanks! Yeah, replacing the sensor with a new one from a dealer fixed it for me as well.
The sensor I had to replace was actually my original one, which apparently got broken when I tore my clockspring. Seems like this might be just a generic symptom of a dead sensor. Last edited by alepar; 07-06-2021 at 04:55 PM. |
