Thanks! Yeah, this one was one of my "winning" shots at Formula D between my friend and I who were having a panning contest. I was able to get that first Scion shot at 1/30 sec. This was my other one at 1/25 sec:

Panning definitely takes a lot of practice...more than a few of my photographer friends just simply can't do it.

There seems to be quite a few people on the boards from the Seattle area. I was there in September and the weather was awesome, I hear it's not too pleasant right now though.

yea i shoot with a 50mm1.8 with a d300 i tried panning in the afternoon at 1/30 and for some reason its always blown out even if i put it at f22 lol gotta try other ways

50mm is I believe (the worst) for panning. Shallow DoF and slow as F focus.

Nah, depends on who you ask. It's low 40s, overcast, no rain, no wind...the air's just cold and crisp. Personally, I love it Now, if there's rain and/or wind...then it sucks haha

You can make the 50mm work...I've shot a few things at around 50mm or less and they have some pretty good results. This one was shot at 40mm on my old D300:



If you keep the camera on continuous focus, you shouldn't have any problems with the focus speed. As for blowing out everything, you definitely need to use a neutral density filter if you're going to shoot at slower shutter speeds. I used B+W 8x ND filter for the two drifting shots I originally posted.

Yep, even the 50mm prime. Never said it was easy...just that you can make it work

tell me about it my uncle sold me the body with the glass he told me the only way ill get any better is to shoot with a prime 50mm for a few months then upgrade to another piece of glass. its been working out though its tough but i saw where he came from when he told me to shot with the prime.... its more of u interacting with ur subject. instead of zooming u need to step closer and find the right angle and what not...... next peice is a tokina wide angle ........
btw my uncle shoots with a d700 also he says he loves the dept of field on the body lol

You uncle is very wise. I usually recommend to the people on my Tips and Tricks thread on NASIOC that they should take a lot of time learning how to shoot with a prime lens, because the lack of zoom really makes you be more patient and learn how to compose your shot better. I shoot with a D700 currently and I love it for much of the same reason

Get a neutral density filter. Even if your photos weren't being overexposed @ f/22, using that small of an aperture is killing any sharpness that your lens might have. A 0.9 ND filter (three stops) will let you shoot at f/8 with the same results and probably with good exposure at f/11 or so. The more important point is that you'll be reasonably close to your lens' sweet spot, so when you get your panning rate right your subject will be nice and sharp.

I've been into photography for years. Picked up a Nikon D90 in 2009 and haven't looked back since! Haven't really bought any new lenses for it.. Have the kit lens - a 18-105mm, and I also have a 50mm 1.8 and 55-200mm zoom. Ok lenses, but I'm thinking before I buy the new car in spring I'll get some more equipment. Just a few samples... which reminds me how much I haven't been shooting lately.. maybe I'll do just that this week. Just a few random samples..
