Not to one up you or anything but I used to use a cheap lavalier mic. It always sounded muffled with the stock header/catback setup. I think it was exceeding the frequency of the microphone. So I stepped up to the Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone I actually just keep it tied down in the rear trunk area near the back/bumper and I have an aux extension cord running to the main cabin that I plug into my gopro. You've probably seen this clip before, but this is what it sounds like with the external Olympus mic plugged in:

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwc-E6ljCK9/

Regardless, any external mic sounds better than most on-camera mics!

In other news, Bill at Delicious Tuning made some tweaks to my tune...it feels much stronger now! I'm not sure if it's placebo effect, but I will have it on the dyno again soon to confirm the power gains.
Oh for sure, I'm actually an AV systems engineer by day so I'm definitely aware of how much a quality mic can do; it's very apparent in your video, especially in the higher frequency range.

What makes this cheap mic bearable even when outside on the rear bumper is that I can adjust the microphone sensitivity on the input of my DSLR as to not sail it into clipping under WOT. In that video it was just starting to clip at the top RPM range, so next time I record I can knock down the sensitivity by one more notch and I'll be good to go.

Glad to hear your tune is consistently improving! I look forward to seeing the numbers.

Anybody know when JDL might have these on sale again? I really want to swap out my JDL UEL for the 4-2-1 but I'm also a cheapskate

Black Friday is normally their best sale of the year. I’ve seen Jesse post some pretty good deals in the Facebook sale groups as well.

If I end up switching to the JDL 4-2-1, would it be worth upgrading my overpipe too? Wasn't sure how much gains could be had by changing it, but it seems like removing the stock piece is a PITA.

Current exhaust setup: JDL UEL catless header > stock overpipe > stock frontpipe > Perrin resonated catback

Removing the overpipe is much easier if the header is out already.

I had similar questions... Here were my questions and answers from JDL:

1. Which front pipe would you recommend for the most power in an NA application? 2.5" or 3" test pipe?

There's really no difference in power between the "Test" pipe and any resonated version. However the resonator(s) will add some weight. I personally haven't seen much of a difference in power levels between the 2.5" and 3" on na testing. The 3" makes slightly more top end while the 2.5" is stronger in the mid range. Nothing major though.

2. Any idea roughly what the power gain difference is between the test pipe and catted front pipe? Or are there any gains with the catted front pipe?

No cat is worth 3-4 horsepower from what I've seen. To be honest the cat that comes in our front pipe isn't recommended for track or autox use. I do have an option for a motorsports use cat that is rated for high heat and horsepower however it is quite a bit more expensive. If you can run without a cat it's what I would suggest.

3. Over pipe - any idea of power gains with this, or about the same as stock?

Definite gains with a header, especially ones where the merge collector is located near the overpipe connection. The overpipe essentially becomes an extension of the merge collector at that point so making sure the diameters are match and flow is smooth is important .

Has anyone come up with a specific OFT tune for this header? I'm guessing due to the 4-2-1 design the standard OFT Stage 2+ tune isn't going to be optimal.

That's correct. There are several tuners that can help with this on the forum. They will use the ace numbers and tweak from there.

I'd try OFT tune changes for longtube headers that was floating around for nameless/plm/ace alikes as starting point .. eg. search for nameless in OP of this thread.

You're going to need a real custom tune. The cam tables are WAY different from the El and uel tunes for everything else.

James at HRi. Contact Kevin Ket at Atlanta Speed Company to get your ecutek setup and tune scheduled with them. Tell them Kyle sent you and that his BRZ needs an H6 swap.

I could be wrong but I doubt @Turdinator would be willing to ship his car to the U.S. to get a tune.
