JO2 RECALL - ENGINE FAILURE

Hi,

My father who is 78 owns a 2012 86, with 85,000klms, which he bought used from a major Toyota dealer with a warranty 4 months ago.

2-3 weeks ago his car went in for the JO2 Valve recall.

On the weekend he went for a spirited drive in the country to enjoy his toy. When he was out in the mountains he called me and I had to collect him with a trailer, as his engine went pop pop pop and seized.

The car has been taken back to the Toyota dealer to discuss what should be done to fix the problem, and they quoted $19,000 to replace/rebuild the engine and did not seem to consider the JO2 recall to be the problem.

I have been doing a lot of reading about the JO2 recall engine failures and his engine failure would seem to have the exact same story.

The recall service was done at 85,908klms, with less than 250klms done after the recall service

What I need to hear directly from any AUSTRALIAN 86 owners who have been in the exact same situation is;

- What process did you follow?
- What were the major disagreements (if any) with Toyota to fix the problem.
- What actions did Toyota take?
- What level of Toyota Australia did you have to contact and who.
- What result was achieved.

I really only want to gain comments from those who have been through the process.

Please leave your comments here, send me a Private Message or contact me via email.

Cheers
David

JO2 RECALL - ENGINE FAILURE

First off you can see they used the wrong sealant on the timing cover. The instructions are very clear that it’s mandatory to use Threebond 1217H which is gray not black. If they ignored that part of the instructions then what else was ignored.

Do you have any more pictures?

Be sure to add your dad’s car to the registry here:

this whole recall issue worldwide is like a horror movie, hope the manufacturers take responsibility for the complete debarkle that has unfolded..

these cars used to have a great record for reliability and durability but this one recall could ruin all that..

Sorry to hear about the car.. This seems to be the first case that has been posted on this forum about an Australian vehicle.

Yes I wanted to get first hand experience from a similar AUSTRALIAN as we will have to address the situation to suit our local systems.

So I had a failure years ago (Direct Injector Seal) which was due to an early ECU ignition map error - since fixed with a software update.

Read about it here https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119638 but Toyota were a pack of C*UNTS to deal with, however the dealership was excellent. Only when I took Toyota to VCAT (Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal) did they fix it.

IN your case whilst the dealer did the work, the car no longer has OEM warranty you could well imagine there is some dialogue between the dealer and Toyota about who's fault this was. In my case when it was clearly Toyota's fault they denied it. Now your car is 7 years old and out of OEM warranty they'll be impossible to deal with.

My advice if you get pushback from a well-worded letter, go straight to DEFCON 5. Do everything in writing from now on. You don't want to take them to court where they can lawyer up. VCAT is great as neither side can bring lawyers and there is no ability to awards costs to the other party if you loose. There might even be 'lemon laws' in your state that you can use.

The other thing is $19k is ridiculous. I'd buy a used engine for $2-3k, probably $800 in labour to install it. Jesus, I built a engine that can hold 800hp for less than half that and that included a new block!!

Recall valve spring

Had my 86 in for recall when they phoned and said ready
Went in to pickup but before I took possession I started it and immediately noticed ticking and rough idle was told that’s normal and it had rough idle when brought in
After arguing for sometime as to who is going to fix they wanted to charge me to look I told them find the problem they said compression down in 3 rd pot could be cause
Went back to get and ticking gone till I traveled 6 ks then started again back in it goes again for a week couldn’t find problem picked it up now getting worse emailed Toyota they said take back to look at but won’t say who paying to look might have to go consumer affairs?
