Unhappy Brand new BRZ rattling sound

Hey guys, brand new owner of a BRZ and am having an issue that is very annoying/worrying.

I've been doing some research online and have found similar threads on this forum however not 100% sure my issue is the same problem.

After my break-in period or during the car makes this rattle groveling sound around 2.5 RPM it is very noticeable from a cold start but after driving the car around for an hour or so it becomes less apparent.

I've tried plugging the soundhole but I don't think this is a solution more of a badfix, it can still be heard.

I tried placing rubber plastic under the sound tube inside the engine bay thinking maybe it was vibrating on to the engine intake manifold but that wasn't the case.

It doesn't really happen when the vehicle is stationary it needs to be moving to be heard from inside.

I took the car into service at Subaru for the first service check and they couldn't find anything at first look so I have re-scheduled a service later this week hopefully they can find the solution but I'm not too hopeful.

Here is a YouTube video recording I did with the issue I'm talking about.

Here is another guy with the same issue on his FRS exact same problem.

Anyone here have any idea or experience with this on BRZs/FRS/86?
There are tons of people I have found online that have symptoms like mine but I'm not 100% sure its the same thing.

I have not noticed that sound with my BRZ. Your car is under warranty... let the dealership figure it out.

Yeah its just annoying because I don't trust the Subaru dealership much but we shall see what they say this week.

From the 2nd video there it looks similar to another person on here recently.

The OP of that thread, @OwlDance, also seems to have found another thread with something similar:

Don't know how much help those will be, maybe at least enough info in there to help Subaru techs reproduce the noise themselves so they can begin to diagnose it.

Thank you very much yeah it's the exact same thing I will be sure to show them these videos, it could be injectors because when they had a quick look last week they couldn't see any heatshield that was not on properly.

Really hope they find the problem and fix it, it's a new car so I'm very surprised this is happening.

Hi csol and welcome to our group …

I must ask, have you made any power mods or any modifications to the exhaust system?

It sounds to me like the delicate, metallic sounds of piston skirts slapping against the cylinder walls This is usually caused by pre-detonation.

How long has this sound been happening?

What kind of gasoline are you using?

Was the sound there while you were using gas from a previous tank full?

No modifications to the car what so ever.
Sound started happening 3 weeks into buying the car 600 km

I fill (here in aus we use RON) 98 Premium BP unleaded

No the sound wasnt there on the first tank.

What your saying sounds pretty scary

Well, IF the sound you are hearing is caused by pre-detonation (commonly called these days - detonation or engine knocking), it doesn't need to be scary.

It's usually caused by using poor gasoline or gasoline with too low of an octane rating. I would suggest that the next time you fill up, to use a different (name brand - top tier) gasoline station and select the pump with the highest octane rating.

Meanwhile let the dealer try to sort out the cause of that sound.

First i assumed it was engine knock, but then i ran a datalog with my open flash tablet (the car is stock map btw i havent touched the ecu) and the log showed no knock correction or anything i could point out that could be causing it.

I will try what you said however, waiting 3 days till its serviced and will report back here what happened.

Ill upload a video with the exact datalog + sound of in cabin so u can see all the finer details.

ok here, 2500 rpm u can hear it slightly.

0:57 sec u can hear the vibration or rattle or whatever it is.

1:16 its pretty loud but it gets masked quickly by the engines natural sound.

As you can see no knock correction or anything that i could pick out that was wrong.

Thanks for posting the data log. I'm afraid that I can't help you with knowing the data log. Why not? Because that is above my pay grade ..

Maybe others will chime in with some comments.
