I might get some flak for saying this but I put a little bit of pressure on the shifter before engaging the clutch and letting off the gas. I've found that this helps the transmission slot into second smoothly and quickly after doing this. I only put enough pressure to feel that the shifter no longer has any play while in first gear, i also don't do this when the transmission is cold.
I've also found it helps do do everything quick at the same time. Letting off the gas pressing in the clutch and shifting at the same time gave me better results than doing things one at a time. |

A- I don't drive my car in winter.
B- I sometimes get completely locked out of second when car is cold. I go to 3rd. C- I found if I rev up to 4k it shifts smooth. All cars have their quirks. |

THIS ^ It is all one action not a series of separate ones. Trying to do each movement separating is the second most common error I see when teaching people to drive MT. The most common error is people that grab their knob in a whole hand death grip and try to ram it into gear Fast and Furious style. This method requires all of your body positions to be perfect or else you are fighting where the shifter actually wants to go. Maybe OK with FWD or other cars with all sorts of cables and linkages to take up the imprecise movement but fails miserably when the shifter is directly connected to the tranny. You need to lightly caress your knob with an open palm and a couple of fingers to gently yet quickly guide it into the slot where it wants to go. ![]() ![]()

This car has a mechanical shift linkage? @SuperTom could be another great item to skeletonize for your featherweight build.

As it seems to have covered; one motion of throttle adjustment, clutch, and shifting happen at once always nets me best results in the cold. Doesn't have to be quick, but a smooth deliberate shift with no hesitation.
It's such a auto pilot habit now that whenever I see these threads and I think about slowing it down, shifting into second gets crunchy and doesn't always want to go into gear. I would generalize all of my shift issues down to this. Whenever I have shift issues it's because I was lazy with shift timing, or throttle. The only other occasions where there are issues is when it's -25, -30c and the cars been sitting out all day. Now if that happens I just let it warm up for a few minutes and shift the car a few times before I set off. |

I blame Hollywood for much of the poor shifting people use since they need to make it exciting not realistic. ![]()

Hahaha of course when I say this I don’t leave my hand on the shifter or put any unnecessary force on the shifter unless I’m shifting. It’s just a lil bit of pressure before I let of the gas and push in the clutch. It’s like a tenth of a second of light pressure and it lets me shift gears with next to no force. |

So it's Hollywood's fault for phasing out of the manual transmission, everything is going hands-free...
