If you were wondering about that little split in your axles boots...

Gulp...found these rocks/stones/boulders...inside one of my CV joints.

I had noticed a small split for a little while on the Driveshaft Shop 800hp axle, but there was no grease leaking out, and the split seamed to be small and "closed"... so I ignored it for a couple of months.

Finally thought I should change the boot. The grease was still intact..but loaded with various sized pieces of gravel ...and gawd knows what else.

Admittedly I do a lot of driving on dirt, but it still blows my mind that :

A- How stupid I am
(and)
B- What can work its way into quite a small split in a rubber boot.

Luckily after a full clean and re-lube the CV is as good as new..and is a testament to what one of their axles can cope with.

Maybe the projectile nature of the rocks means they lanced the surface, leaving only a small bit of evidence of the entry? Crazy lucky they didn't cause any harm. Now I want to check mine

considering how much time you spend off paved roads, perhaps some underbody protection should be in order. at least in the form of some lexan/plexiglass/mud flap ziptied to the lower arm mount just to deflect the gunk away from the cv axles!

nah, blame the car. it can always be something or someone else's fault!

you should press charges against the sanctioning body for leaving pebbles on the race course!

i just think it'd be funny to attempt to sue an offroad sanctioning body for 'dirt on the course'

be like a surfer complaining about the size of the waves!
