What upsets me is that for decades the definition of "Gender" was: either of the two sexes (male and female).

Somewhere along the line that morphed into: the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, femininity and masculinity.

At latest count it appears that range covers over 64 distinctly different terms.

I think the problem is the combination of different spectrums into one classification. It would be much simpler if somebody identified themselves by multiple terms.

Sex: What your physical body is
Gender: What you see yourself as
Sexual Orientation:. What you physically are attracted to
Gender orientation:. What you are emotionally attracted to

4 enumerated properties, if not analog spectrums.

MMSS : straight male
Mmgg:. Gay male
Etc.

I've always thought of sex as a "yes" or "no" question. My last three years of teaching college students I gave up on gender. That was tough for a southern boy raised to say "Yes/no sir/ma'am" whenever the chance arose.

The real problem is they want strangers to identify them appropriately as if it is a classic gender. I have no problem with that, but they get mad when you get it wrong. How the heck should I know if they are not wearing a nametag or something?

It may well be the case that, at least until the dust has settled some, gender as a concept is undefined and therefore useless. Unless I am absolutely certain I usually don't use gender pronouns.

Edit: If that offputs some people, well, I am well and truly sorry and meant no offense. But that particular subject has become a minefield. I prefer to avoid it.

It is habit for me In general I speak to strangers formally until I think it is okay not to.

I have never seen a cute baby. When I was a little more obnoxious women in my social group would turn up with their newly delivered child and I might be asked what I thought. I supposed to gush and carry on how cute and adorable this thing was but I caused offense when I told them what I thought. If they didn't want to know they shouldn't have asked. I never held either of my nieces when they were babies and would leave the room if they started to cry.

My first glance at a baby makes me nauseous.

Because it's not yours. I have never held any other person's baby. I just say "no thanks".

I know I shouldn't be replying but I think my reply is worthy of a amusing response.
I counter your position with I have seen cute puppies who aren't mine.
