Yeah holding off on a purchase because of the head unit in a driver centric car doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's not a creature comforts car, that's for sure. Too bad there's not a trim level that didn't come with head unit/speakers installed.

To me, waiting for a MY2018 doesn't make sense if all you are waiting for is a head unit. Why not buy a 2017, and change out the head unit to something good? I personally have the Pioneer AppRadio 4 with CarPlay that I got on Amazon for $549.99 CDN. Which is less than US$500. I have CarPlay and I can almost assure you that the sound it pumps out is way better than whatever Subaru gives you for 2018.

A lot of people don't want to have to 'mod' their car right out the door and I get that. Android Auto for anyone that has used it is a big selling point.

That being said I get a feeling it's going to be a horribly under powered and buggy head unit like most Android Auto HU's are and so people will probably want to swap it anyway for something like the DDX917WSM.

An issue that I've seen with 2017's and getting a new HU is it's still questionable if the steering wheel controls/backup cam work with all of them.

I'd assume some do, but I haven't seen a concrete list for feature parity/compatibility.

I have the same Pioneer head unit in my 2017 86. It does work with the steering wheel controls, and backup camera. And it does sound a lot better than the stock unit.

Did you need to get spacer inserts or anything for the sides to fit?

A standard Metra dash kit is all you need. Just like most other aftermarket radios.

The Kenwood DDX917WS works with all of that (just need to buy a harness of course).
I'm sure there's others... but this one is good.

So update... Word on the street is don't expect the gen 3 infotainment system in the '18. Probably won't see an updated headunit till the redesign. Nothing official released but those are the rumors.

Spring of '19 , I'm changing out my system to a Alpine ute-62bt , it has 4v out , blue or classic Green Alpine illumination. I'm keeping it simple, like the interior set up was initially designed by Toyota. I personally don't like 6-7" touch screens, that are Bright, which in effect is a safety issue as that can shine in your eyes while driving, and that's just no bueno. Maybe I'm ore sensitive as I'm older… no longer in my 20's. Safety first.
