I tought it could be the case as well, so I phoned the original dealership, who's done all the service and asked. They never touched the camera nor the head unit and were never asked to look into this issue.

All that was done other than regular maintenance, was to replace the battery this year.

I've asked Subaru if they could swap out the camera, we'll see. Otherwise, I'll just live with it...

Can I ask, how do you know it was never touched by anyone other than that specific dealership? It's not beyond reason to think the previous owner may have had a failure in the camera/headunit and got it replaced outside that dealership or did it/had it done themselves (resulting in the 3rd party ordering the wrong version on accident).

Not to mention, if that did happen they wouldn't be keen to divulge that to anyone either. From the dealership's end I would say it's obvious someone else worked on the car as it now contains a component that was not installed factory on that vehicle. A problem like that would've shown up when the dealer took receipt of the vehicle, not 4 years later.

True, I’ll give the previous owner a call to confirm, worth asking again, but when I first met him and asked, he said it was like that and never bothered having it fixed.

As I said, the camera is correct for your model year, it's the head unit that doesn't match.

Might just be me, but those statements always smell fishy to me. It's a great way to cover-up something you don't want to admit you did.

Even more so when he could've had the dealer fix it immediately and free-of-charge at the beginning.

We’re talking about an elder man, he was only using the car to go to the golf court and back. 6800KM in 4 years. He did all the maintenance even when not required and gave me the invoices. Heck, he even did a full 20K KM maintenance and inspection prior to selling it, even though the car was only 6800KM.

I think it’s just ignorance from his part and thought it was perhaps normal.

My main issue with this car is the anti-rust treatment the car had. The engine bay is looking nasty and it’s taking quite a lot more ebow grease than expected to fix it. But I’ll eventually finish it up and be happy to look under the hood!

gpvecchi - When you say it’s more likely the head unit to be incorrect, would you know which one should have come with a ‘17 MY?

I'm not experience in US models, but I have full access to Subaru spare parts documentation. Please send me your VIN number in PM and I'll check what HU you should have...

Hmm, searching by the head unit model on google, FA765CS, finds other Inazuma editions with the same one, looks like it the correct one.

Subaru lists the 2017 stock radio as part number 86271CA760.

The (virtually) same radio has a different part number for each year of the BRZ. That's what makes it really easy to order the wrong one. For example, the 86271CA740 is pretty much the same but is the part installed on 2015-2016 models. This difference might not be reflected in Fujitsu's model number if the hardware is the same but is setup differently software-side.

I just checked and this is what I've got, an 86271CA760 installed, along with the correct camera for the 2017...

Now I don't know what to think or what could be the problem.

I thought the incorrect camera was installed, then maybe a head unit from a previous year, and both are correct...

Hihihi, hahaha!!!

I think I'm losing it...

LOL!!!

I guess I can say that I've got an exclusive feature no one else has... Hahaha!!

Non safety-issue manufacturer design flaw is all that I can think of that may be the issue.

What you can do is ask other people with that same year and Inazuma edition if they are experiencing the same issue as you are (basically what you are already doing here). If other people report the same issue to you but simply don't feel that it is an important enough problem (or even recognize it as a problem) to inform Subaru of the issue, then you may never see a fix. You could possibly go through all the Subaru technical support bulletins for your VIN to see if it has been reported to Subaru and if they have a solution or not (again, what you have already done).

Not much for you to do but gather more information yourself, or simply live with it.

If it bothers you that much though, you can always go aftermarket.

Or you can be like @Tcoat and bitch and moan and complain that it sucks all the time and never put any effort into actually doing anything about it.

Hey I will get around to it. At this point I am not cutting up wires on my warranty covered car so they can deny me something down the road and then I can cry about the nasty dealers and how they are ripping me off.
