Why would you drive all the way to Austin, Tx just for an exemption?

No need sir. Most of the countryside of Northern California’s 530 and 707 area codes are smog exempt. Surprisingly, CARB isn’t as unreasonable as everyone thinks. They aren’t interested in sweating the small stuff like having ten thousand people or less in a rural area smog their car. My parents lived only 30 minutes north of Santa Rosa, and they were smog exempt, when realistically, would requiring people to drive 30 minutes (or likely less) to an area with a smog shop to smog a car biennially only after eight years of ownership or during title transfers really be putting people out that much? They could, but they don’t. Now my parents are retired further up north on Clear Lake near two of my brothers, and that area is also smog exempt.

Woah... I never knew California had locations of freedom. Well that sure makes your swap a lot easier.

That's interesting! I grew up in the 707 and we always had to smog. Guess i was in an unlucky zip code.

Any plans to add the rocker retainer kit ? That is my second biggest issue with this engine outside of oiling.

That is some first rate carnage @Irace86.2.0

Like I said, everything north of the Bay Area and Sacramento is 707 and 530, so it covers a huge area, and as you can see by the maps, the population density is fairly sparse. This means that most towns, townships and rural areas are exempt, assuming they are remote enough from a city. For instance, Sebastopol has a smaller population over a larger area than Cloverdale, and yet the residents there aren't exempt because they are 8 miles from Santa Rosa versus 40 miles, respectively. Moreover, Cloverdale has limited locations for getting a smog and the closest DMV is back in Santa Rosa or north to Ukiah. I am assuming this is how they think about it.

No. Staying NA I’m not too concerned. Plus I keep my shift point at 7k. I have the mentality at the track that I have to drive the car home and that can be an 8 hour drive sometimes.

Mine was NA, around 6k rpm when it kicked them out.

If this car was lighter than what I have now like I was doing a track build on a stripped out 86 then I would consider staying NA with a K24 swap and doing a 300hp build, but as it is, this will be getting a turbo setup either initially or down the road. If this was going in a Miata RF or something just as like like a Lotus/Jannarelly then again, NA all day long, but the car is too heavy to stay NA for my preference.

A turbo has a little more drama and screams JDM to me that I am leaning that way. If I wanted NA feel, which feels great, than I would do a NA build or stick to a LS3. Naw, I will turbo.

You could always keep the twin and wait until there's a crate electric motor available.
Just do a crate k20c1 swap. 300hp and 295lb of tq. And no having to worry about the engine blowing up.
